Running Firefox, the link above takes me to http://filkertom-itom.blogspot.com/2006/08/004-cant-get-file-to-play.html I click on Download and it takes me to http://www.tomsmithonline.com/freestuff/oddio/CantGet_128.mp3 and a 404 error
Okay, here's the thing: I too am running Firefox, and when I follow that link -- which I have several times over the past few hours -- I get the file. I just did it again, from the very link you posted above. Try right-clicking (or special-clicking, if you're running a Mac) and directly Saving the Link As....
When I do that, it saves a 4.42 KB file that won't play. Windows Media player says that the contents don't match the file format. If I rename the file to .html instead of .mp3... it opens and shows the 404 page
Yeah, I tried. Neither of those work in iTunes. They both give me the same error. "The URL might point to text-only episodes, or contain file types that iTunes cannot play."
I'm not familiar with the way FeedBurner works, or BlogSpot for that matter. It may have something to do with one or both of those services.
Well, part of the problem may be that I'm not doing it as a podcast. I admit that iTunes gives me hives. Everybody seems to love it, but every time I've installed it I've uninstalled it within the hour and spend an afternoon cleaning up the crap it's done to my system.
I'm with you. I'm damn sick and tired of the iPod being the "only" MP3 player--or video player, for that matter. I've had a pocket MP3/AVI player for over a year for well less than half the cost of an iPod (and it doesn't try to lock me in to a particular proprietary file type), but just try to find any accessories for the ZVue. It's not the iPod that I mind so much... it's the collective attitude that it's the only game in town, and the domination is so complete that "iPod" is coming to mean any small pocket media device.
So I'm unapologetically a ZVue partisan and I object to 'iPod' being used as a generic term for MP3 player and 'iTunes' for any music sharing facility.

Date: 2006-08-25 12:31 am (UTC)Ah. That'll do it then. iTunes doesn't handle regular blogs. Only podcasts.
