Nobody in filk ever, ever has anything to be ashamed of.

I know this goes without saying. But sometimes we feel the bad vibes -- such as we got last week at LACon (thankfully resolved). Sometimes we hit sour notes, or write lyrics that are less than wonderful. Sometimes the damn frog sticks in the damn throat and it ain't Kermit.

No more. Never again.

Some yahoos out my way decided to do a tribute album to Ypsilanti, the unkempt and underemployed and beaten-up working-class city immediately east of Ann Arbor. Just listen to that MP3, with some of the song samples.

We are gods compared to this, do you hear me? Gods.

I made it through the first sung line, and screamed. Makes Jordin Kare sound like Placedo Domingo!

Yp, Yp, Yp, Yp Yp, Yp, Yp...

Heh. :)

Ypsi's neat. There's a bitchin' little club there called the Elbow Room that I've played twice. Had fun both times. They used to have a giant "LAST SONG" light they'd turn on if bands went too long.

Ypsilanti? Did H. P. Lovecraft name that town?

Named after a hero in the Greek war for independence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demetrius_Ypsilanti

Growing up in Ann Arbor, I thought it was basically Ann Arbor's bastard little sibling, until I actually spent time there on a regular basis...

It's a nice little town. It has its iffy areas, but so does Ann Arbor. The EMU campus is nice, and the core of downtown is rather pleasant.

Twenty years ago when Marty Burke was singing at pubs around that area, he would occasioually refer to Ypsi as "Ypsitucky" and "the fourth largest city in Kentucky" on account of all the "by day I make the cars and by night I make the bars"-type folks living there.

it could have been produced by the ConCom at Mile High Con.

Meanwhile Tom, don't hire any of those singers for your next album.... pweeease!

You know, I was trying to think of a clever comment to leave (something along the line of playing this for Simon Cowell and watching his head explode, thus ending American Idol), but my synapses are refusing to fire properly after this. Oy vey.

(throws in "Serenity" soundtrack to begin the aural rehabilitation)

Should I be grateful that I "Can't Get The File To Play"?
(no, I really couldn't - Winamp, Quicktime and WMP11 all barfed on my system trying to play the damn mp3 - yes, it probably got corrupted during the download, but from the responses I see above, I don't think I'm going to go to the trouble of dumping my temporary files and trying to re-download it :) )

I'm going to be a daring renegade and state that I've heard worse filk. These people seem to be in tune, at the very least.

Of course, I only got as far as "Yp, yp yp yp yp yp" before I got bored.

Hmm. Yip yip yip yip...is Ypsilanti a haven for kobolds? Yegads!

Well, my dialup connection crapped out about where you got bored, but I have to admit I've sung worse filk.

Especially you.

... Except now I'm picturing you and Tom and a bunch of other filkers dancing around singing "WE ARE AS GODS!" a la The Trio in the Buffy episode "Storyteller."

I blame the sleep deprivation.
