Rob Balder ([livejournal.com profile] partiallyclips) and I are honored and humbled to be nominated for a Pegasus Award in the category of Best Filk Song for "Rich Fantasy Lives". We thought it would be a boss idea to cut a new version of it, which we now happily give to you. Distribute it freely; don't use it in a commercial project; credit me and Rob ("Words by Rob Balder; Music by Tom Smith. © 2004 by Rob Balder and Tom Smith. Commercial use without express permission from the authors is prohibited").

This is my favorite piece of yours. Rob's lyrics and your music were a joy. I cannot wait to get home so that I can download this!

W00T!

BTW, official Philcon invitations and a list of program items that you may want to be a panelist on will be going out by email VERY SHORTLY. Just an FYI.

Wow. Great cut.

Were you ever in the same place for this, or did you record separately and then mix them together? Because if the latter, I'm amazed how well the timing worked. Plus your harmony on the final choruses.

Also, great work on the additional orchestration.

Thanks kindly. Actually, it took a bit of work for that timing -- see, I did the original music files for both our albums, but for some reason when Rob sent me the audio (which he recorded out his way and uploaded to me here in Ann Arbor) the timing was very slightly off. I have no idea why. It took some work, and a MIDI file playing at 154.67 bpm, but it all worked out.

I can hear that slightly-off timeness in the first verse, but it smooths out later in the song. Still rocks.

Although, it's weird for me: I have the original Rob-vocal version of the song so seriously tattooed into my skull that hearing a new version of it feel quite odd.

I'm pretty sure Rob was trying some different rhythmic things in that verse. I could've sliced and diced it to make him spot-on with the beat, but all I really did was tighten it to the overall tempo.

I noticed the new tempo, too. Sounds kinda waltzy :D

Ummm... it is a waltz. Always has been.

Frickin' awesome. I'll definitely be downloading this when I get home.

And congratulations! I was among the (obviously many) nominators, and I'm looking forward to voting for it in the final round as well. (I know the ballot's out - I just haven't had the time to listen to the samples for all of the categories.)

There are not words for how much I love that song
... so I guess I'll stop trying to write them.

Congratulations!

I had some weirdness trying to download this, earlier. If you experience weirdness as well, I am mirroring the file at my site, and Tom has it on his MySpace as well.

Nice clip. This was the only song on the ballot I hadn't heard before, so it was nice to fill the gap.

Btw, a bit of playlist amusement for you -- I downloaded the song, imported it into iTunes, and hit play. At the end, it flipped elsewhere in my library, since I typically listen to iTunes on shuffle.

The follower was Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy".

I am unsure why I find that so horribly amusing. :)

Yes, ever since I heard it at OVFF, it was definitely one I love. I mean hey - write a song most of fandom can apply to themselves why don't ya! =D

I know, it's packed with nominees who have every right to win. "Best Performer" is the hardest category by far. And I confess, I am not even sure I will vote for my own song. I will wait til after the concert to fill out my ballot.

The upside is that if RFL does not win, it's guaranteed that an exceptionally worthy song will have beaten it. And there's always next year (and the chance to lose to Skullcrusher Mountain! O_o)

As I said in Rob's LJ
