I've been having a lot of fun with my MySpace page, and also browsing friends' lists, which I presume is everybody else's big thing to do. I'm finding some of my old favorites online, and discovering new and cool music. So I thought it might be fun to highlight someone now and then.

Today, I'd like to point out Amy Rigby. Lotsa Guys Suck songs, but musically solid and lyrically clever and bouncy and way more fun than it likely should be.

So, anybody you've discovered on MySpace you feel like sharing with the class? :)

Comprende. It is owned by a fairly evil megacorporation. But most of the people on it have the best of intentions, as far as I can tell, even if a lot of the regular users seem extremely young and Goth.

I suppose pimping my own band's MySpace page here would be rather gauche, yes? :)

My favourite MySpace find at the moment is a band called Hungry Lucy (http://www.myspace.com/hungrylucy)—sort of Gothy trance electronica with a beautifully ethereal vocalist.

Not gauche at all. Go for it. :)

And, Hungry Lucy sounds pretty good. The vocalist is good, although I don't find her to be that distinctive; it's the contrast against the electronic that makes it interesting to me.

That's a fair critical assessment; I'm fond of her voice, but I agree that it's the context in which her voice is set that makes their sound. I especially like their "concept" album To Kill a King, largely because I love the audacity of a Gothy trip-hop electronica outfit doing a concept album in the first place... ;)

Okay, then! My band is The Kimberly Trip (http://www.myspace.com/thekimberlytrip), also found here (http://www.thekimberlytrip.com/). Basically, we're a bouncy guitar-pop band made up of geeks of various flavours—SF, computer, RPG, music, pop culture, and more. :)

Full disclosure: Marissa is married to a dear friend of mine.

Still, her voice is very sweet and she knows her way around a guitar for sure, and I love her original stuff.

Not bad. Nice sounding songs, nice voice.

Without meaning to be a critical grouch, you might want to mention the audio engineering Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Audio_engineering) to her, or to whoever's recording her. A noise gate would help her a lot, as would having her and her guitar just a touch closer to the mics.

She's got next to no equipment and knows it, hehe. I'll point her at that wiki, though, it looks fantastic.

Well, what's she running -- PC, Mac, or Linux? God knows, there's a metric buttload of very good to great free software out there -- everything from soundfonts to full digital audio workstations, and certainly effects plug-ins. I'd be happy to recommend some stuff.

Hm. Actually, I might have to assemble that anyway....

I'll handwave her over to this thread, iff'n you don't mind, and if you do post something on your journal I'm sure she'll catch it.

I'll take a copy of the recommended list too. I do get asked on occasion (as recent as a couple of days ago) on what software and other stuff that people can use.

Besides, I can use a working mp3 player for the mac. iTunes 7 crashes on my machine now... (Can't wait for apple to fix it.)

Sussan Enan (http://www.myspace.com/susanenan). one of her songs (there are only two on her page right now) was featured over the ending images of "Bones" this week and is utterly haunting and just gwah. it's called "Bring On the Wonder.
