I'm trying to figure out podcasting the iTom MP3s directly without screwing up the Feedburner feed -- they've got two different mechanisms, SmartCast and SmartFeed, which don't work together. I may end up submitting stuff to podcasting sites manually. In any case, I've started with PodSafe and Podcast Alley. Please do let me know if you actually find me there.

What're the differences between the two? Having to do manual changes sounds the pits.

From the look of things, the SmartFeed sends the feed page to RSS aggregators; the SmartCast creates an RSS enclosure for any media, e.g., an MP3, referenced on the page. So, basically, through FeedBurner I can either send the iTom blog page or the song itself, but not both.

If I'm reading that wrong, I'd be happy to be shown otherwise.

Podcast Pickle is another good one, and, as a favorite, iTunes store will do it as well.

(At least those were the ones I used while I was podcastin'.)

Yeah, but iTunes requires that you use iTunes software, which in my experience is bug-ridden crap that screws up my system. Those of you who love it... I'm glad for you. :)

*shrug* I've never really had a problem, but no sense in provoking anti-Apple sentiments. Was just saying you could promote there, if the idea is to get your music out there to the masses. You don't need iTunes to publish with the store.

Huh. I'll check it again, but it sure looked like you did.

Damn - I guess you do! :/ Sorry, I guess I didn't remember... it's been 8 months since I did mine. :)

You could always have someone submit it to iTunes for you. Surely someone you know uses it. ;)

Alternately, with Smart...Cast? Whichever one takes the mp3 and encloses it so it can basically be podcast, you can supply a link to be put into iTunes to go after that feed, via advanced/subscribe to podcast.

And I would dispute the iTunes issues...but the newest version has a major audio bug that I can't stand, even though there is a workaround until/if they fix it, so I'm with you, sadly.

I've used Feedburner and iTunes myself for my own long-dormant podcast, so I know it works. ;)

Interestingly enough, iTunes 7.0[.0, yes, I know, and shame on me for running a .0 release of any software] has a feature to grab album covers where the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) has them — and it had the cover for And They Say I've Got Talent on-file. They didn't have the others, nor other things I'd expect them to have, so that really struck me....

That one actually got sent to iTunes, and several other sites, through CD Baby's electronic distribution deal. It's part of the reason I haven't released Last Hero to them yet -- I'm debating whether I want to still be part of it. It's not like it's made me any money.... :-/

Ah, gotcha. Well, if it's an expense that's not bringing in the bucks, maybe you should cut it back. Or does it count enough as advertising to be worthwhile even if you aren't getting iTMS sales? <Shrug>. I dunno what to tell you.

Couldn't find iTom podcast on either of those sites. What keyword should I be looking for?

And as for iTunes being bug-ridden crap, are you sure it's not microsoft? I know several people who had problems with iTunes, until they reinstalled (or removed) windows media player, then all of those iTunes bugs mysteriously disappeared. Remember. for a few years whenever you tried to run quicktime on windows, an error message popped up saying that quicktime would not run properly and asking if you wanted to uninstall it, yet if you chose to run quicktime after all, it played without a hitch (microsoft marketing at it's best). Which isn't to say that iTunes doesn't have problems occasionally (my old iPod would glitch with some podcasts until they came out with a new version last year).

Tom, Smith, iTom, science, fantasy, filk, comedy, week. I think those were the main ones I used.

I'm gonna do a reinstall in a couple of weeks, and when I do I'm going to run roughshod over every media player I can find. I'm sick of Windows Media and its frickin' DRM. I hate QuickTime's insane configuration. I despise Real's quirkiness with its own goddamn file format. And I hate all of them for their tropism to take over your machine. I'm getting rid of all my Roxio software, I'm dumping Quintessential; I'm undecided about WinAmp. As fas as iTunes goes, I have attempted installing it on three separate occasions, one of which was after a clean Windows install. It has savaged my computer and hogged resources every time, and given me no benefit I can discern. I don't need or want it.

All I want is something to play MP3s and WMVs and not fuck up my system while doing so.

I have been using Winamp with an old skin for years now for audio playback. No problems with audio. I don't let it have video. That has gone videolan recently.

I have it loaded with my complete audio collection of about 9500 songs and it does take a moment on a p4-2.4gig, 512mb ram, XP Pro SP-2 to load the directory in, but once done, it plays fine for me.

When I search for 'iTom" on Podcastalley all I get is Japancast.net and Rosemary Goes to the Mall. When I serch for iTom on Podsafe, all I get is Learn Japanese at Japancast.net and Conscious Podcasting Systems (Come visit Tom's new mall outlet, "Japanese Mental Hut" right across from the food court)

Oh, well, as long as you let me know here I'll grab them every time.

As for music players, one of the people I correspond with regularly had similar problems and I remembered he said they mostly cleared up after he uninstalled windows media player, so i shot off a quick email for more details and he replied that at first it was an unmanagable beast, but after he uninstalled wmp and tried to reinstall itunes it worked smoothly, only grabbed a fraction of the ram it used to, and ran quicker than any other program he had been using at the time. However, he still prefers winamp for his usual listening enjoyment, mainly using itunes to manage his ipod.
