Date: 2006-09-19 12:43 pm (UTC)people have been bonkers over sports for ages. long before video games came around.
yet, how can the adults try to tell their kids to behave when they issue death threats when a call for a team, not affecting them physically, doesn't go their way???
/shakes head
gee, wonder why I don't like foolbore games?

Date: 2006-09-19 01:11 pm (UTC)Where be all the right-wing carping on this? If'n they gets up in arms o'er a few Muslims' reaction t' the Pope's comments -- the Pope, mind ye, a man o' some significance -- then surely, this be worth a few harsh words, aye?

Date: 2006-09-19 03:11 pm (UTC)Some people are not twits. Some happen to be football fans. Some happen to be religious. Some happen to be political.
Don't hate the games. Hate the twits.

Date: 2006-09-19 06:13 pm (UTC)To the best of my knowledge, a grand total of ZERO high school students have died playing video games. And the most serious injury you're likely to get is carpal tunnel syndrome. (And a bad case of Dunlap's Disease, as in 'mah belly done laps over mah belt')
What kind of 'mind', and I use the word loosely, gets more upset over PRETEND blood and PRETEND injury and PRETEND death than over REAL blood and REAL death? (The kind of mind that runs for office, it seems...)

Riots are expected following concerts and sporting events. The property destruction and violence are often extreme. Has there ever been a riot after E3? After Million Man Lan? If video games make people violent, why is there not more violence at places where thousands of gamers congregate and play the most violent games, all the while hopped up on Jolt?
But imagine Senator Lierberman calling for a Congressional investigation into High School football deaths. Or Jack Thompson talking about post-game riots. Never happen.
All we can do, really, is wait for this generation -- the one which grew up playing games -- to take over. Then they'll have something new to demonize, whatever it is THEIR kids are into.

Date: 2006-09-20 12:11 am (UTC)WHO THE FUCK CARES IF OKLAHOMA LOST A FOOTBALL GAME?
Seriously. And if Oregon lost in the same way, I'd be saying the same thing. It's certainly not significant enough for people to be giving fucking death threats over.
Funny, I thought college was supposed to be about learning, both academically and who you are as a person. Not playing a retarded game where you take an imperfectly round ball and try to throw it back and forth.
Silly me.
