What made this film - the American version, anyway - even extra super-creepy is that it was filmed in Seattle, where we live. So we knew where they were most of the time, and in many cases, had been there or around there. Plus, since it's Seattle, it had Seattle winter weather, and we were seeing it in the winter, so when we came out of the theatre to walk home, it looked exactly like the movie.
In case you're wondering why the Japanese are killing us when it comes to horror movies...
It's because unlike just about every turd that comes out of the Hollywood crap factory, directors and writers of J-horror actually assume that their audience is made up of at least marginally-intelligent adults.
