Anne and I saw The Prestige today. I'm not even going to link to any pages; I have no idea how spoilery they might be. All you need to know is Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale play two rival stage magicians at the turn of the century. It's got a hell of a cast, very good direction and art direction, only one annoying (and very, very small) factual slip-up I could detect, and you don't need to know more than that.

Last movie I saw anything like this was The Usual Suspects. Before that, it was Sleuth.

Anything you're planning to see?

I've been meaning to see the Departed. I've heard it's good.

Also, I want to see Saw III. The first two are some of the only horror movies I like.

Take the sum of The Godfather, Gangs of New York, and Mission: Impossible. Multiply by at least five. That's how good The Departed is.

This is unrelated, but I have to ask: were you by chance at the Royal Shakespeare Company performances yesterday? Because I saw someone at both performances I could've sworn was you--at least based on pictures I've seen. :)

And you'd have been right. :) Wasn't Stewart amazing? Although, actually, both casts, both shows were just great. Music, sets, costumes, damn.

Bah! I should've come introduced myself as a fan. :)

And yes. I'm just now able to write up my thoughts on the whole thing, and I'm still not doing it justice. I thought the use of music in both shows was particularly amazing. The fact that Patrick Stewart was so good that I DIDN'T spend the entire show going, "Wow, that's Patrick Stewart!" speaks volumes.

Saw the trail for "The Prestige" when we went to see Children of Men. It certainly LOOKED good.

If you're looking for more magic tricks, I recomment The Illusionist. Very well done.

Me, I'm counting the days until Happy Feet, which looks to be the Most Amazing Movie Ever Except For Empire Strikes Back And Possibly 1776.

we wanna see the Prestige, and definitely Happy Feet when it comes out next month. kane wants to see Farce of the Penguins, if it gets shown anywhere near louisville. other than that, i can't really think of anything, other than there have been a LOT of trailers lately that make me go "oooo!" and look at kane with my hopeful face.

Definitely agree on The Prestige. My (spoiler-free) post on it is here.

There are a few well-reviewed films out now that I'm interested in. The Departed and The Queen come to mine. But next weekend, I think my top priority is going to be Flushed Away.

There's a whole slew of political documentaries out right now that I'd love to see, but I'll probably wait and rent them on DVD- Shut Up and Sing, the John Lennon one and Death of a President (which I know isn't playing in the States, but it's all over the theatres in the Toronto-area right now).

Saw "Nightmare Before Christmas" in 3-D today. Awesome.

Death of a President is playing in the US.. in fact, it's at four theaters within an hour or so from me.

Admittedly, I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so we're not typical, but it is showing in the States.

Box Office Mojo has it on 91 screens nationwide.

Ah, OK, I didn't know that! I thought I had read it wasn't going to be playing in the States. Also, I've read that many of the Canadian border cities have had movie campaigns trying to lure Americans across the border who wanted to see it, so I figured it was the only way they could.

Still, 91 screens isn't very many. I bet those showings are very strategically placed :).

Really want to see Flags of Our Fathers but I'm not sure if [livejournal.com profile] kshandra could stand my military history geeking during and afterwards.

We both are going to be first in line for Happy Feet. Penguins!

Yes, penguins! (Good lord 'n' butter, you should've seen how many Happy Feet billboards, posters, etc., there are in Santa Monica right now.) Have we decided if we're going to see Casino Royale the same day?

Just got home from Julius Cesar. Going to see The Tempest on Wednesday. Much rejoicing for the Royal Shakespere Company being in Ann Arbor right now. :)

Oh, and tomorrow night the Michigan Theater is running The Producers at 7p. The really really real Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel version. I have never seen this on the big screen and if I can convince myself that I want to drive down there I'll prolly go see that.

I just saw The Prestige, and my (very small) reactions are here. Let us say that it is now two hours since I saw the movie, and I'm still a little scared to crawl into bed, because I'm not quite tired enough to go directly to sleep. There was a lot of rage and fury and darkness in that film.

Excellent movie.
We saw it early on a sunny Saturday morning. Immediately after we watched some episodes of the British comedy Coupling (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0237123/). Still had trouble sleeping.

The Prestige is an excellent movie to see around Hallowe'en. I wouldn't call it scary, but it was darn spooky. :)
