THE LAST AIRBENDER Super Bowl Spot
Feb. 5th, 2010 08:56 amI really, really don't know. There has been much made of how the background characters are mostly Asian, but the leads have been cast as non-Asian. There's the fact that I don't think M. Night has the chops (no pun intended) for a half-martial-arts action film. There's the fact that, in the first teaser, the Hero's Big Move was blowing out candles.
To me, the real clincher is how very dark the film seems. Not merely the photography; the tone has Heath Ledger running through my head, yelling Why so serious?
Avatar: The Last Airbender is a fantastic series, very serious when it has to be and very grim when it needs to be... but it's also filled with hope and humor and lots of bright, powerful emotion. And everything I've seen about this screams that it doesn't get that.
Thoughts?
