Aside from all of the REST in that... is the candidate saying being a sheep is a good thing?

No. The point is that being a sheep is what leads to the ultimate fall. Or I've badly misunderstood the ad.

See, I saw it as being a sheep is good (fiscal conservatives are the true sheep in the ad, no?), but sometimes there are wolves in sheeps clothing and you have to watch out for them.

That's what I got, too.

Are we supposed to be connecting this with a "lamb of God" theme...but evil?

An evil lamb mentioned in a [livejournal.com profile] filkertom entry? Sounds like a song cue to me....

You're ALL wrong. This ad's message is clearly FENTON 2012! A death sheep from hell will lead the way!

Seriously though, Tom: you should totally make "Fenton For President" campaign t-shirts. If not a whole song.

Change we can all BAAAAAlieve in.

some reaction polls among Republican voters before I condemn the ad. Christianity is full of images of sheep. With the target audience, this just might work.

Remember the rule of selling -- it's not what you want that's important, it's what gets your audience.

Yes, it's always simultaneously amusing, disgusting and frightening all at once, watching Republican candidates pander to the extreme wingnut base through the primaries, and then turn around and posture as moderates in the general election.

And, of course, to avoid overt racism, fascism and downright lunacy in the primary that can be played back by the Democrat during the general, they talk in code words and symbols that mean something in the secret teabag language while looking like baffling nonsense to everyone else. To us, it looks like a bad attempt to paint opponents as fiscally irresponsible; to the wingnut base, it is saying, "I promise to force prayer and creationism into California's public schools."

Why IS christianity full of sheep images? Sheep get shaved against their will and they get eaten (and some parts of Scotland and Australia they have something else done to them). Why would anyone compare themselves to sheep? It's like wanting to be called a pawn or puppet or dinner.

Actually, it's not very flattering. "You don't know what's good for you, you're so dumb, lucky there's this loving shepherd around."

Yeah, but that's not the way they sell it. It's, "You are a lost lamb, and the Lord is your shepherd, and He loves you and will guide you."

OH dear. You're thinking like a Democrat again. Or *horrors* an Independent.
I know--but I think the idea they're yanking on teabagger code phrasing is the only explanation I can think of. And it would be useful to see some rightwing polling on it.

But hey, doesn't the former head of HP know *anything* about putting together decent media ads? IO mean, on the Itarwebz and all that,m let alone TV?

Carly is questioning someone else's ability to lead, fiscally? Her "leadership" is blamed for bringing down how many companies, again? Sorry, but someone who has used a golden parachute more than once should no longer be trusted with anything heavier than a lemonade stand cashbox.

CENT ONE: I instinctively turned the sound off partway through, figuring it was one of those gag clips that ends with the spooky scarecrow-thing popping up and shrieking really loud.

CENT TWO: I could have sworn I caught a glimpse of Fenton behind that tree.

The big question, of course, is have you talked to Fenton and is he going to sue?

Let's cut to the practical matters -- is there any way that you can make any money off this ad? Suing for infringement, licensing fees, anything like that?
