I don't see how he can keep doing it. I mean, he keeps kicking ass on each one of these speeches...but how can he keep from completely losing it, and how can he switch gears back to the normal flow every time?

Well, the network tried to get him to do more Special Comments, but he says he will only do them when inspired. And, unfortunately, this administration does a lot to inspire them.

There's an old military saying

"Don't call me 'sir'; my parents were married"

Bush certainly deserves the repeated "sir"s in Olbermann's style.

What? What do married parents have to do with being called 'sir'?

Obviously you've never had a close connection with the military.

1). Enlisted men are supposed to call officers "sir" or "ma'am" (as appropriate, and the saying predates copious quantities of "ma'am")

2). Perhaps nearly as obsolete as the lack of "ma'am" is an epithet for a disagreeable, cruel, or stupid person which has the literal meaning, "born of unmarried parents".

So you're saying that "bastard" got, well, bastardized into "sir"? I am skeptical.

Perhaps moreso because the version I heard (from the close connection with the military I don't have) was "Don't call me sir, I work for a living!"

The implication is that if one's parents were married, one is missing the fundamental qualification to be an officer.

I fear for Keith's life. But we need his message. He has earned the right to use Murrow's sign-off, and does it again with every SC.

(I probably should find a more generic political userpic...but I'm not sure I like the implication of needing another one.)

I heard Bush's comments when he made them, and my first reaction was along the lines of "George? I remember that. What were you smoking in 1975?" Bless Keith. You're right; he's a national treasure.

I'm amazed he managed to get through that entire thing without mentioning the phrase "empire-building." Then again, when the Soviet Union fell, I was about the least surprised person on earth.

He was the first influential person in mainstream media to use the word 'liar' to define Bush. Everyone else was dancing around the issue with words like "intelligence failure" and "misinformation", as if they were afraid to come right out and say it.

Murrow was key to bringing down McCarthy...so the parallel is justified.

I'm just waiting for Bush's "Mr. President, have you no sense of decency?!" moment. Olbermann is the key to that moment coming to fruition, and it would seem the rest of NBC News is starting to follow suit. NBC News stories are starting to call the Iraq War "unwinnable" now. His influence is rubbing off! :)

It's when Faux News starts quoting Olberman's commentary as valid that I will celebrate. Until then he's just one more erudite voice which the White House may choose to ignore. Perhaps at its own peril.
