My score on The 3 Variable Funny Test:

**************************************

the Prankster
((33% dark, 38% spontaneous, 15% vulgar))

"your humor style:CLEAN | COMPLEX | LIGHT

Your humor has an intellectual, even conceptual slant to it. You're not pretentious, but you're not into what some would call 'low humor' either. You'll laugh at a good dirty joke, but you definitely prefer something clever to something moist. You probably like well-thought-out pranks and/or spoofs and it's highly likely you've tried one of these things yourself. In a lot of ways, yours is the most entertaining type of humor because it's smart without being mean-spirited.

(Note: While I don't mind all the tests, and I even like this one, I can't stand the various "1ee7 haxx0r skillz" involved. Whether it's the badly-written nested tables or the insanely-bloated-with-white-space graphics, they take up too damn much screen real estate. Therefore, the text version.)

I don't mind the graphics and stuff... as long as it's safely tucked inside a cut. And my only problem with this test was one of the movie questions gave me a choice between four movies I've never seen, all farily recent. Whither "It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World", "Duck Soup" or "Arsenic and Old Lace"?

Not everyone is as well versed in the classics...

Not everyone is well-versed in current pop culture, either... I mean, I don't disagree with the result I got, I'm just a little irked at the quiz designer's lack of historical perspective. How can you list funny movies and not include 'Airplane' or 'Young Frankenstein'? Either of which, IMO, are infinitely funnier than the choices the quizmaker gave.

I'm guessing here, but it seems to me that the quiz designer figured, with some justification, that there are likely to be more people taking the quiz who've seen recent movies than those who've seen "the classics".

Also, nothing else in the test has anything to do with the all-time funniest in any particular category of humor. I think the movies in the question were chosen because they represent different types of humor, which is what the quiz is measuring our responses to.

(Note to Tom, sparked by your subsequent post: I've seen Election, Rushmore, and Heathers. All have varying degrees of darkness. None are crass or vulgar.)

I have seen Heathers. Thought it was okay. You're right, it wasn't very crass.

As I recall, the instructions on that segment said that if you hadn't seen the movies, you could leave that part blank ... I did, and it let me. ;]

Actually, I'm more of a "Try first, oh $#!+, where'd I lose the instructions at, they were just over *BAM* OW! My shin! #^%*&%^ I know I put 'em here somewhere, maybe they're in a PDF online... nope. Huh. Okay, if I wedge this in there that seems to work close enough" kind of guy. :)

Problem was, it looked as if it was the kind of radio button that insisted on at least one of those choices being taken... but, yeah, the modern crap movies were ludicrous choices, I think. My own choices for that sort of spectrum would be....

... Well, let's do that next thread. ;)

You can leave OKCupid questions blank -- I did, since I'd seen only half the movies and the only one I found funny was half of Heathers ... and I REALLY need to be in the right bleak mood to find that funny.

My idea of a good comedy is something like Ghostbusters or The Princess Bride that's got a lot else in it besides humor. My sense of humor is quirky enough that Hollywood doesn't have any interest in catering to it.

It also listed me as the Prankster. I don't play practical jokes; I just like smart humor, that's all. Conan O'Brien ... he's a smart man, sometimes very insightful, but I don't find him funny. Ashton Kutcher is in my "wastes of protoplasm" category.

Exactly. I only rarely play practical jokes, and I try to make them as harmless as possible. On the other hand, while I consider myself more Wit than Prankster, I have a huge problem with people who are witty for its own sake. My First Comedic Rule of the Universe, Make It Fuckin' Funny, is constantly violated by writers and performers famous and obscure who don't seem to realize that clever is not necessarily entertaining. (When I come up with a quick little verse, and you guys want me to expand it to a full song, that's the rule I invoke when I say No. The joke has been delivered; time to move on.)

Absolutely. Something that is witty for one minute can become boring if it's spun into a three-minute song, irritating as a half-hour sitcom, and agonizing as a two-hour movie. (Example: nearly any sketch from Saturday Night Live.)

A joke can be both funny and clever, but I don't personally think there's any connection between the two. We do have people who are basically just paid to be clever -- but they're stage magicians, not comedians, and there's an additional element of showmanship required to make them worth watching.

When I took this 15 months ago, I scored "The Wit" with 65% Dark, 30% Spontaneous, and 22% Vulgar.

Retaking this version - with 7 of the 8 movies listed I can't recall having seen - 66% dark, 15% spontaneous, and 21% Vulgar. I can only say that I don't think I'm that Dark, but the masochism tango still cracks me up.

Interesting test. I'm not sure I completely agree with the assessment, but fun. And yeah, the movie choices weren't all that great. Where's Blazing Saddles? Or Clue? (or am I the only one who loved the Clue movie?)

My results were:

CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK

You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer.

Your sense of humor takes the most thought to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my opinion.

You probably loved the Office. If you don't know what I'm talking about, check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/.

Clue was fantastic. Tim Curry is a god.

I got the Wit as well, same as when I took it about a year ago. I think it fits well, like I did then, too.

Maybe that's why I like your stuff....
