First things first, kind of important because of the timing: Those of you (like me) who've been considering getting one of Garritan's big three -- the Personal Orchestra, Jazz & Big Band, or the Stradivari Solo Violin -- they're having a group buy. Starting today, ending Dec. 21. Normal price $199 each, likely final price for this sale $139.

Second: If you'd like to hear what the Garritan Personal Orchestra sounds like, or if you'd just like some excellent music, there's a whole Christmas album for free download. (If you scroll down, they've got albums from the two previous years as well.)

Third: If you like ambient/trance music, Psychetronica has made their entire first album, Beyond the Wall of Sleep, available for free download.

Fourth: And, if you like that, you should really check out The Ambient Collective.

Did you see this (http://garritan.com/Nutcracker.html)?

"The Los Angeles Ballet dances the Nutcracker to the sounds of [Garritan's] Personal Orchestra!"

Cool, no?

Cool, yes. I saw it, but didn't realize the entire score was on that page for listening. Garritan's demo page has, literally, about a thousand user-created pieces on it. It's its own online classical radio station.

Off-Topic, But . . .

As the subject line says, this strays from the topic, but this is the closest entry to what I want to tell you.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Kroger, when I heard John Denver's voice coming over the muzak. "Callypso," to be precise. At first, I started singing "Callisto," but not too loudly. I didn't want to run into diehard Denver fan who might accuse me of committing blasphemy.

But after I stopped singing, I tuned out the muzak, and I started hearing something else in my head. It was John Denver -- singing "Callisto."

Welcome to the club, ace. I've got the full orchestration and five-part harmony. Still not as weird as the It's A Small World ride singing PQR. ;)

Does the John Denver in your head get the "Iolous" line right? Mine hasn't; at least not yet.
