A legend falls. James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, has passed away at the age of 73.

Any of his stuff you like in particular? I can't even think the man's name without "I Got You (I Feel Good)" going through my head.

"Cold Sweat." That's the one that says 'James Brown' to me.

Uhoh. Toronto Radio was broadcasting some James Brown event VERY recently, coming to one of the Casino's (I can't remember if it was Niagara or one of the other charity-run type also in the area).. but.. Um.. well.. guess that's gotta be cancelled now.

As far as my fave James Brown moment, probably goes hand in hand with the original "Blues Brothers" movie. Showin' exactly WHY they called him the "godfather of Soul!"

Living in America

Although, every time I hear it, I keep wanting to sing "Living with a hernia"

"Get Up Offa That Thing" is pure James Brown. Workin' it hard, getting everyone in it with him.

I was suprised he made it as long as he did, with all the things he'd gone through. Rest well, dude.

God bless, James. Thank you for the gifts through the years.

For me, it's a toss-up between, "Please, Please, Please" (which made for a great stinger on Blues Brothers 2000), and "Say It Loud (I'm Black & I'm Proud)". Both awesome songs, and both set the stage for the years and musicians to follow.

Amen. I'll put in the Word for his performance in THE BLUES BROTHERS as well.

I'm a bit miffed at the B.B. King's Blues Club in NYC. They had James Brown booked for New Year's Eve but since pneumonia does not exactly hit overnight, should have gotten another act in place by now. JB is still on their website. Boos and hisses.

Pneumonia can hit overnight. Or even in shorter times. Several years back; just after finishing chemotherapy, I did a run from SFO to Menlo Park for three sets of passengers. From SFO through the first two stops I felt fine. By the third, I was feeling a little off. By the time we got back to the airport (about 30 minutes) I had a raging fever and couldn't stand very well. Later that night, with my fever spiking to 106, my wife got me into the ER. Where I was told I was within an hour or two of renal failure and death from pneumonia.

Total time: 11 hours. From feeling perfectly healthy (as well as someone recovering from cancer can feel, anyway) to lying in an ICU with tubes in every orifice they could find.

As for the club, James Brown entered the hospital on Christmas Eve and died in the early morning hours of Christmas. How many booking agents do you think are in their offices this morning? How many of the club's personnel do you expect to be sitting at their desks just in case their NYE act suddenly dies? Hell, for all we know their web designer may be in Denver with his family, and completely unaware that changes are needed!

Give them a day or two, for Pete's sake!

Sorry, I was relating to my own pneumonia experiences, mostly due to sustained overwork and not stopping when a sniffle was small. I will try harder in the future not to be a Jim Henson In The Making. [wry grin]

Some club personnel are working today since the place is open and has two concerts in their two performance spaces tonight. I'm sure they are all a-flurry trying to book another act of comparable stature at this short notice. But I still think that their audiences are likely to expect to know *instantly* what's going on as soon as they hear the news, particularly the ones who bought tickets already. I know I'm working on my day off, trying to gather info on a memorial service because I'm going to get bombarded by my own clients tomorrow.

That, I'm afraid, is Show Biz.

And Happy Christmas to you.

Ow!

Did anyone mention "Say It Loud (I'm Black and Proud)" or all those songs about popcorn, or Sex Machine?

Sorry - I'm a throwback to the 60s/early 70s.

I'm thinking of adding a James Brown CD or 2 to my collection. I have the Blues Brothers soundtracks, and that's about it. Anyone have any recommendations?

And has anyone caught the band TV On the Radio? They're my newest favorite.
