[livejournal.com profile] per_solo tells us about Big Damn Chefs, a Firefly-inspired cookbook. (Looks as if our darling [livejournal.com profile] vixyish did the back cover.) All proceeds go to the nonprofit Freedom From Hunger.

Which made me do this:

The Chef They Call Jayne
Words: © 2006 by Tom Smith
Released under a Creative Commons Noncommercial ShareAlike license
Music: "The Ballad of Jayne" by Ben Edlund

Jayne. The chef they call Jayne...

His roulades were rich
As the gravy he'd pour.
Stood up to the Man
And gave him wheat flour.
Our love for his chow
Ain't hard to explain.
The hero of cookin',
The chef they call Jayne.

Our Jayne smelled that muddy McBreakfast,
The coffee like sludge or cement,
And he saw the Mickey D's fake this
For two dollars and sixty nine cents.
So he said "You can't do that to my people."
He said "You can't serve 'em crap on a bun."
So Jayne strapped on his apron,
And in ten minutes' caperin'
Made frittata, perfectly done.

He kneaded, he whipped,
And he beat and puréed,
He sliced and he minced,
And he stirred and sautéed,
Our love for his chow
Ain't hard to explain,
The hero of cookin',
The chef they call Jayne.

Now here is what separates eggwhites
From common yolk like you and I.
The man they call Jayne
Then created a Pain
au Chocolat
that would make grown men cry.

He dropped that brioche on our tables,
He dropped it in restaurants and bars.
The man they called Jayne
Left that pan of his Pain
And breaded out for the stars!

His food all was rich
And it fed all the poor.
He never used mixes
You get in a store.
Our love for his chow
Ain't hard to explain.
The hero of cookin',
The chef they call Jayne.

*groans* =)

"Hero of Canton" has to be one of the most filkable songs I've ever heard in my life. I think we have ten in-family versions of it.

Also, you can't choose more than one selection from the same artist (i. E. Here are my five favourite songs by The Tragically Hip).

Well, I think in this case the appropriate thing to do would be to slip them magic little words, "Words © 2006 by Tom Smith. Released under a Creative Commons Noncommercial ShareAlike license" after them when you print them in the second volume. I am honored and flattered, and, okay, I'll record the darn thing already. ;)

I'll have to find the rights and attribution to the original song, which I'm very sure was written by Joss Whedon. Since the actual melody won't be in the cookbook, it's not as big a thing, but I'm sure he'd rather.

Actually, it was originally written by Ben Edlund, not Joss. Mr. Edlund gave permission to the Bedlam Bards - Cedric would probably be able to give you more useful information.

But my biggest question is who was NBCs first big thing. Olbermann is good, but he was better at ESPN.

I'm hoping to include some Big Damn Crafts in the second volume of the cookbook, and wanted to have a Cunning Hat knitting pattern there, too! It should be a very instructive one teaching not only the pattern, but also general knitting, for those who've never tried before but want to make their own hats.

Do you have suggestions for one, or could write one for us? Or would you like to post the request to the community? :)

...now you've gone and gotten me to join another community, gorramn it... ;)

Hey, thanks for pimping the cookbook for me and Michelle! :) When I checked the website this morning, we'd sold about 100 copies already.

To reach our goal of $1000 to Freedom From Hunger, we need to sell at least 326 copies - and that's if they're *not* sold through affiliate links (affiliate links make part of the profit go to the link you're coming from). So if you get one, make sure you don't come to CafePress through an affiliate link, but rather from a fresh webpage such as the BigDamnChefs.com link... does that make sense?

Anyhow, I love Michelle's artwork, and there are products in the CafePress store featuring it, too! :)

I have a duhhh question. I thought I sent in some recipes but I don't see them listed. Did I misremember or misread? Or should I still send them for the sequel?

There was a period of time when our mail server went kapuht and we lost those. :( You might've sent them during that time - I'm sorry!

But yes, you can still send them in for the sequel, absolutely!!!

Send them to: submissions at bigdamnchefs dot com

Looking forward to seeing them!!

I would love to hear you record this, mostly to hear how you handle the eye-rhyme of Jayne and Pain (French for "bread," pronounced more like "pan"). I know, I know--picky, picky.

I'm a Firefly fan, so I got that side of it, and the playing on the original words is hilarious, but I still feel I'm missing something. For one thing, I'd never heard of Tony Danza. I looked him up, and find that he's an actor. He's not a celebrity chef? Is there some reference in the chef side of this song I'm not getting?
