Are we, the US people, better off because we invade Iraq: NO, just several billion dollars poorer and thousands of lives less.

Is the world a better place because of it?: NO, cause despite a lot of blustering and saber rattling, Saddam would have had his ass handed to him if he would have moved against his neighbors

Are the Iraqi people better off because of the invasion: Probably Not. They've gained certain freedoms and safeties but their country is a mess, the streets aren't safe and chaos is now a way of life.

So, to answer your question, Nope.. doesn't sounds like it was a very good idea.

It was a bad idea, not thought through to it's logical conclusion, and executed poorly on top of that.

Incompetance of the worst sort. I will be quite happy to see this pack of idealogues out, and some more pragmatic people put in their place.

Only one person still thinks it was a good idea, apparently. Unfortunately, that one person is the decider who gets to decide all by himself whether it's a good idea or not, and screw the rest of the human race if they don't like it.

Been saying, loudly, publically and often, that it was a bad idea since the first attempts to link 9-11 to Iraq back in October 2001.

but yeah, there are those who think it's a good idea. they think we should just kill all the Iraqis, set up our own state, claim all the oil, and if Iran or Syria or Saudi Arabia gives us any crap, we should do the exact same thing to them.

I heard that the other evening, opicked up my plate and alerted my waitress that I was moving because the company was nauseating me too much to eat.

Well, my mother's side of the family. They agree with the people valarltd overhead. They apparently think that we have unlimited militay force and are highly disappointed that we have not "nuked 'em" yet. They also think we need to "nuke" Iran...and Syria...and while we're at it, we should probably take care of both the Palestinians AND the Jews. Wouldn't hurt to explode Pakistan - and don't you think China's gettin' a bit uppity? In fact, we should probably hit North Korea, too. They have nukes, right? And France. Just because.

Sigh... I reject those genes.

But because I come from these people, I 'understand' their thought process. They don't know what happens when a new-kew-lar bomb explodes. They have no concept of nuclear winter, fallout, or the still-existing potential for a chain reaction. They do not have the capacity for sympathy for innocents who would be killed - whether instantly or after days/weeks/months/years of excruicating pain/illness. These are people who beleive that people who disagree with the current regime in USA should "buy a plane ticket out" but who vociferously lambast regimes with which they do not agree. They do not believe that survivors of US attakcs will become angry militants. They do not think there is anything wrong with globalization. They think global warming is a liberal myth - even as they comment on the weird lack of snow and oddly warm winters and scorching summers.
They still don't believe any American atrocities were committed in Vietnam, Korea, or Iraq.
They think they have freedom and privacy, and they believe religion is what's missing from our federal adn state governments.

Understanding them makes them more frightening, not less.
And these people apparently make up a small majority fo the American populace.

I want out.

Yes, OF COURSE it was a good idea. We HAD TO!!

After all, Saddam had weapons of mass destruction... *smack!*

He had direct ties to Al Qaeda... *smack!*

The people of Iraq greeted us as liberators... *smack*

Iraq is a better place now... *smack!*

America is safer because of it... *smack!*

The price of gas went down... *smack!*

At least it was a quick war... *smack!*

The more support for the war and the President who executed it plummets, the more you're only going to see the most rabid specimens of right-wingers, to who things such as logic, reason and rationale mean nothing, represent the remaining pro-Iraq-war body.

Or as my friend Edward likes to call them the "Bush ate that baby on the white House lawn for its own protection" crowd.

Or as I like to call them "People who still think South Park pokes fun at both sides equally".

From: [identity profile] trifleresplende.livejournal.com
South Park has never "mocked both sides equally" but it's downright idiotic to assume that it's conservative propaganda, as you imply it is. Sure, I don't agree with a lot of its claims, but the show is a lovely work of genius in its own right and it's tactless to attack it for what it chooses to mock.

(and this is directed at the main post, not your comment, lumpy)
Oh, and one has to be a completely hopeless idiot to believe that there has been or has ever will be a single positive result of the war, or a positive end. No matter which road we take at this point, there is no conceivable bright future. That doesn't mean we should give up and fall into a nihilistic pit of dread, but we really shouldn't be expecting anything good to come out of our efforts to fight evil. As long as the corporations and the rich bastards control everything, and as long as the government is set up so they can, and in every country on the planet, there's no way the righteous (yeah, I know, it's a laughable word, but I shall type it anyway) can win. And there's never been a single instance in human history that suggests otherwise.

Yes, I think invading Iraq was a good idea.

Considering they had "everything but the enriched uranium to make an atomic bomb."

Considering they were led by a nutcase who gassed his own people.

Considering they were being more and more recalcitrant about inspections.

Considering that I'd much rather 3500 people die in Iraq who volunteered to fight, than 3500 die in America who never did anything.

Considering that the casualty rate, for over 100,000 troops deployed for 48 months now, is incredibly LOW, especially fighting against an active guerrilla movement.
