This is going to be an interesting race since the WorldCon, therefore a plurality of the voting base, is in Japan this year. NaSFIC members also get a vote, if memory serves.
I have not kept up on Fiction as well as I used to, so no comments there. If Lois McMaster Bujold wasn't nominated this year I'm not all that interested. [JUST KIDDING! Mostly. One more prose Hugo and she beats Heinlein's record, that will be an accomplishment.]
Dr. Who with multiples in Dramatic, Short Form. That will split the vote by fans of that show severely. I'm rooting for "Girl in the Fireplace" which really tugged at the heartstrings with a story that could ONLY be told by Dr. Who. That's what Science Fiction is about! I'm a big Stargate fan but "200" was a Valentine for the fanbase, nothing more.
Laurence Shoen for Fan Writer. Hoo boy, he will be even more insufferable than ever. He was the only high school kid in our D&D group who could actually speak Elvish... he grew up to be a Linguistics Professor and the founder of the Klingon Language Institute, as well as the leading writer in that field which is, I suppose, the reason for the nomination. Well I'm proud of him really; he put that unusual inborn talent for created languages to some real use.
Not only was Lawrence nominated for the Campbell, but John Scalzi (last year's winner of the Campbell) was nominated for Fan Writer, for his blog! AND he was a previous Best Novel nominee!
So now, you can be a Fan Writer AND a Pro Writer at the same time! I like that, since most pros are also fans! *grin*
As far back as the 1960s, Piers Anthony was nominated in both fannish and pro categories, and about a decade back, David Langford won both fan writer and short story award in the same year.
Given the redistributable vote system that Hugo voting uses, split votes can occur, but often don't. I expect all the Doctor Who votes to coalesce on Girl in the Fireplace in the second or third round and for that to be the winner.
I like "His Majesty's Dragon". Haven't read the others.
Dramatic Presentation is a win, regardless of how it goes. For short and for long form both. Although I could hope for PotC for long form, and Girl in the Fireplace for short form.
As usual, I haven't read or seen most of what's nominated. I did read the first Temeraire book, and while it's good to see new writers getting recognition, I thought that the book was rather dull.
I did see all of the Doctor Who episodes nominated, and would probably pick "School Reunion" though I am sure one of the three will win.
Alas, my feelings towards the Hugo's have become "Same Old Same Old"
Nothing leaps out at me. Nice to see newer writers on the story lists, the fringe players are the same.. same fan writers, same fanzines, same fan writers.
Most of the cast of characters in the shorts are the same..
So far, of all the fiction nominees, I've only read one novel. That was Glasshouse, by Charles Stross. I liked last year's Accelerando more, but I'd have no problem with Glasshouse winning.
Of the four movies I was going to nominate for Long Form Dramatic, only one, "The Prestige", made the list. The good news is, that was my top choice. The bad news is, I blew the deadline for nominations, and I don't know if my ballot would have made a difference.
Of the Long Form Dramatic nominees I've seen (haven't seen "A Scanner Darkly" yet), I'd rank "The Prestige" first, followed by "PoTC: DMC", "Children of Men", and "V for Vendetta".
