Sadness. Actor Karl Malden has passed away at the age of 97. While he was probably best known as Lt. Mike Stone on the TV series The Streets of San Francisco (with a young Michael Douglas as his partner for four seasons), and for a whole lot of commercials for American Express Travelers Checks ("Don't leave home without them"), he also appeared in minor, unimportant, little films such as On The Waterfront, Patton, and A Streetcar Named Desire (for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). Farewell, sir.

He had two genre credits: Meteor and Alice in Wonderland.

He won an Oscar for A Streetcar Named Desire and was nominated for a second one for On the Waterfront. Although nominated for 4 Emmies for The Streets of San Francisco, his only Emmy was for the TV film Fatal Vision.

In 1985, there was a television version of Alice and Karl played the Walrus.

This was the musical version that had (among others) Ringo Starr as the Mock Turtle and Ann Jillian as the Red Queen, right?

I remember him as the preacher who stands up to the town's queen bee in Pollyanna with Haley Mills. He also was president of the AAMPAS, the group that gives out the Academy Awards.

He will be missed.

I actually remember him best from his delightful role as the reverend in Disney's Pollyanna.

I remember him from a bit of this, a bit of that...and odd as it seems, I do take some heart in seeing his age...in these days of unexpected, young-ish deaths, it's comforting to see someone who lived a very long and very full life.

May he rest in peace; may those who loved him find comfort in memory.
