Well, actually I seen a fan vid done for the song using the live-action LoTR, about a year and a half ago. The audience was laughing more at the jokes in the song instead of the jokes created by putting video to the song. That (most recent antecedent) type of funny fan video is much more common.
Seen it at Media*West, (May, 2006) where they have had a big culture of fan created videos for over 20 years. Shown in their film room, pretty much dedicated to these type of fan films. Most are putting rather emotional songs to their fave TV show or series of films.
Just for the record, it's Carolina "Otaku" Uprising, as in, a bunch of anime fanboys and fangirls. But we're also quite fond of filk, as evidenced by the crazy musicals we've been putting on at Animazement. Thanks for the link!
