Received in e-mail this morning:
Hello,

What I want to discuss with you now is so delicate that it's really
hard knowing how to proceed. More also, I'm so desperate that I don't even
know who to trust. Well, I'll rely on my intuition over you. My name
is Asif Ali Zardari, late Benazir Bhutto's husband. Owing to the
unlawful seizure of my late wife's assets here in Pakistan and overseas by the
current govt of President Musharaf despite existing court injunctions
forbidding this, I now seek your assistance in good faith towards the
transfer of a yet to be discovered money into your care. This will be a
job, but it can be done. There is something for you at the end. I
assure you. As we proceed, you will get to know everything about the money
which will give me the credibility and believability I need to convince
you to be of great assistance towards my family.

Finally, now that I have taken you this much into confidence, make sure
it does not go further. I'm sure you'll understand. Please do revert
back asap.

Asif Ali Zardari.
Any good spam out your way?

I remember that the day after the U.S. invaded Iraq, I got spam asking my helping in transferring a large sum of money out of Baghdad. It doesn't take long at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if people outside the U.S. are getting spam asking their help in transferring funds before the mortgage crisis wipes out the accounts.

Lately I've been getting spam with subject lines like "gonorrhea homunculus tailspin." Now, why on earth would I want to click on such a message?

How about a request to help transfer the money her deceased husband squirreled away, sent by the Pope's widow?

I haven't checked my spam filtered mail that much of late - I should in case something real got stuck there - but what stood out was how much of the spam was Russian. Weird.

I got a Nigerian Letter variant about two months after Arafat died, telling me that I needed to help his widow.

I wouldn't put Spanish Prisoner scams above Asif Ali Zardari, honestly.

I got a variantion on the Nigerian letter this morning claiming to be from a group of soldiers in Iraq. Apparently in addition to appealing to my greed, the scammers are trying to engage my sense of patriotism to help the "solidiers" carry out what would be an illegal plan.

Some spammer thinks I'm interested in "Fetus V1agrsA". I'm not sure what that's supposed to do and to whom.

Even if someone else were *in* the womb for the fetus to "get it on" with, it would be a sibling! ewww... ;)

Revert to what, one wonders.

All the spam I get is pretty much interchangable, but I did get a message this week with the subject line "Why be an average guy any longer false rabies". Which made me laugh uproariously. Because after all, if we can't even trust rabies anymore, what's the point?

I got an email from a credit union to which I do not belong, alerting me that there has been a marked increase in the number of "phishing" emails. It then helpfully went on to explain the concept of phishing, and said that because of this new rash of fraud, they've deactivated my Visa check card, and I should call them at the given phone number so they can review the activity with me and reactivate the card.

This concerns me because this plays on the old wisdom that you don't give out your information when they call you - you call them and give it. And I don't know how many folks will remember the part about you call the number that's printed on your card. That's what they're banking on.

I made the effort to grab the headers and send the whole thing to the credit union in question, but I think what I need to do next is send this one to my husband so he can forward it to his mom. 'Cause I think his mom *would* get caught by one like this if the spammer happened to pick the correct financial institution.

That's a prime example of the chutzpah these guys have nowadays: A phishing warning e-mail that is, in fact, itself a phishing e-mail.
