Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] markbernstein for the 2008 Hugo nominations. Once again I'm woefully behind on stuff, but [livejournal.com profile] shsilver is up for both Best Fanzine and Best Fan Writer, and the Best Novel category is like a Who's Who of Who's Hot, between Robert J. Sawyer, John Scalzi, Charlie Stross....

My choice for Best Dramatic (Short Form) is, hands-down, "Blink". Long form, a little trickier, but probably HP and the Order of the Phoenix, which was much better than I feared it might be.

And, of course, many congrats to Phil Foglio, who's up for Best Pro Artist.

A question: Does Brad Foster actually still count as a "fan" artist!? I first saw his stuff in pro gaming magazines back in the late 1970s.

Your thoughts on the nominees?

There's been discussion of that on my local SF group's mailing list. It's probably a function of definitions, like "World Enough And Time" on the Nebula ballot.

Scott Lynch deserves the Campbell. The Lies Of Locke Lamora and Red Seas Under Red Skies are brilliant.

I'm surprised at Heroes being up for the Hugo as an entire season, but intrigued. It may have my (not actual, as I'm not eligible) vote.

Och. Still not on the list. Maybe I should submit more stuff to Analog :)

Why does Scalzi count as a fan author?!?

Yep. There was a big hooraw over this last year, when he was first nominated in the category. Whatever is clearly fan writing, as it's done on an amateur basis. His pro writing gets nominated in its proper categories, as witness the Best Novel nom.

Not sure that a whole season of a TV show being nominated seems fair in a category usually reserved for film only, but it's clear that the voters weren't too thrilled what was out there. I disagree, since I thought I Am Legend and PotC3 were more worthy than HP5.

Wondering if Chabon will win, and if he will come to the con. He's definitely a comic book geek, but I don't see him being as comfortable at WorldCon as Gaiman or Bujold.

And Blink wins this and the Nebula hands down.

Oddly, I was just reading a comment relevant to this on The Lurker's Guide to B5. JMS notes that he feels an entire season of a show (Season 3, in this case) would be a reasonable nomination, if that season, like B5's, were plotted as one long work by the same writer(s); he compares novels of 100,000 and 300,000 words, noting that both are still novels. It's easy to argue that this is the case here; Heroes season one clearly all runs on one primary storyline, which also fairly clearly ends with the end of the season. Hence, it can be considered one piece of work.

I'm not sure if I prefer "Blink" or "Human Nature/Family of Blood". The former has more direct concepts of Science Fiction while the latter is such a brilliant piece of writing, I usually call it the best Doctor Who story ever put on the screen...!

Do you see the dilemma? :)

I do. They are both superb -- especially the acting in the latter -- but "Blink" does have the added aspects of being [a] less predictable, i.e., we all know John Smith is going to be The Doctor again by the end of the episode, and [b] scary as fuck.

I think the great thing is, if either of them win, I won't mind. Both were so excellent!

Either is indeed worthy. I expect that "Blink" will win, but prefer "Human Nature/Family of Blood." And lo, Neil Gaiman (http://journal.neilgaiman.com/2008/01/bad-blogger-no-liver-stories.html) agrees with me. (Perhaps not surprising since the punishments the Doctor meted out to the Family were very Gaimanesque, especially the bit about the "little girl" in the mirror.)

My only thought on this:

I am woefully behind on these awards. An acquaintance of mine, Peter Beagle, won something last year for something he did - and I don't even remember what.

"Two Hearts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_S._Beagle%27s_Two_Hearts)", a sequel of sorts to The Last Unicorn. And it actually won in 2006.

Scalzi for Best Fan Writer. He almost got it last year; I want to see him win it this year.

Foster's nom is for his fanzine appearances, of which he still has many.

I took a look through

and found that "World Enough and Time" was nominated in "short form." Now, I saw it at the Japanese screening (complete with Marc Scott Zicree, George Takei, and live "romanji" subtitling - Zicree and Takei were at Worldcon) and thought it was great. I've been following the series since it started, and this was a great production.

I'm also surprised he Yiddish Policeman's Union? I LOVE the title. I'll have to go to the library and unvirgin my library card to get it and read it.

I wonder how Brad's doing? He was in our SF club back in Texas. As for who's a fan and who's a pro it's all a matter of how you sell your art and how it is purchased. Think about you TOM... When did you magically go from fan filker to PRO filker? I think you told us it was when you started making a living at it. I know very few artists who are pros in that sense and I know Brad doesn't make his living at it.
