I had cause to check the iTom page, and found that "marcusdowning", aka "Mr. Sadie of The Dyslexic Studeos", had created a video for "Everything Is Dangerous".

To those of you who have created vids for my music, I thank you so much. I'm flattered beyond belief. But I have to say something, and please understand I'm not slamming or anything, but... could you please make sure that the post incorporates three things?
  • "[song title] © by Tom Smith"
  • a reference to tomsmithonline.com
  • "This song and video are released under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial ShareAlike license"
I don't mean to be a jerk, but I do have to protect myself and my songs. Thanks.

So. Any other cool videos you've seen, or made, lately?

All I can say is be careful what you click on. Accordions can be dangerous to one's ears! ;-)

FWIW there's a rampant increase in the amount of Filk on YouTube lately...

There are a couple of his songs over on the filk archive. (I saw this video right after he passed away.)

It's Ghastly!! I thought that I recognized him before I clicked on the video to watch it. As for the song, I should torture people on Dementia Radio with it. Too bad my show hour was yesterday.

Holy carp! I missed that even though he called himself Uncle Ghastly!

I guess I didn't recognize him without the pipe. ;-)

Ain't it wonderful?

And there also appear to be quite a few videos of the Celtic jam session at LACon 3 in 1996. Lots of good stuff out there.

Just to comment on your "restrictions" -- I don't think you're being a jerk in the least. Those are all pretty damn reasonable requests!

Tom, you need to protect your rights to your music, and your request is not unreasonable (a copyright notice, a link to your website, and the CCA license statement? Sheesh, give them a challenge why don't you!). It is not a slam when you find something that uses your music that is missing some of this, and you have to point it out. A public reminder does not constitute a slam either. (hopefully my lack of sleep and caffine at the time I am writing this does not come off as an anti-slam)

That's perfectly reasonable...and awesome that you put your music out there under Creative Commons! I already do video work that requires a lot of disclaimer-ing on my part... I'm a machinema creator using City of Heroes/Villains to make a sitcom. (http://queens-of-kings.blogspot.com if you get bored or curious. :) )

Having talked to many anime music video creators I can confidently say that your request is very reasonable and most, if not all, of the creators don't mind the occasional reminders. Usually they get a burning desire to create a music video and devote all their creative energies into it then release it to the world! Then re-release it when they notice they forgot to put the name of the anime on it. Then re-rerelease it when someone points out they forgot to add their name to the credits. Then re-rererelease it when someone asks "What song is that?"

Most of the AMV crowd are a pretty good bunch. And with the subjects that filk often covers you'd think there would be more filk AMVs. *shrug*

As for credits they often do extra stuff for the credits and list _everyone_ involved as well. Look at the 45 minute AMV Hell III as an example of a hilariously long string of credits backed up by anime characters lip-synced to Country Road. :-)

I'm sure the problem with the lack of filk in AMV's is the lack of filk awareness. These people usually watch a _lot_ of anime, leaving very little time to surf the net looking for new music. One thing you could do is post links to filk songs that are free to download off the net, along with a challenge on anime/machinema music video sites (like this one: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/home/home.php )

Another thing to do is hold a contest. Have a filk-heavy con announce a contest for best filk music video (if they get enough entries they could have different categories like anime, TV shows, movies, live action, Flash, etc.) and send announcements to various fan sites to start the ball rolling. FuMP could make this a regular quarterly feature, where the person who makes the best music video of a song that was on FuMP gets their video on the next CD (if legally possible, most fan music videos fall under Fair Use, Parody and the like) and some kind of trophy to be designed by the FuMPers themselves (now that's a scary thought). Or individual filkers could hold contests for free CDs, guest appearances in future filk songs, or maybe a song of their own or something else that makes fans go "Squeeee!"

Once you get something like this going the word will spread through the fan music video circles, and if it's supported eventually become a regular outlet for their creative urges.

That...is an excellent set of ideas...

Hmm....I bet if I had a bunch of links I could contact the admin and see where he wants them posted or thinks they're available to be posted. I'll pick up a few from the other thread and see what else I can come up with and maybe get a hold of him...

Let's see, a FuMP regular contest for music videos. Hmmmmm... The FuMP Endowment for the Humanities, or "feh" for short? The Filkers Fellowship Foundation Tourney, or "FFFT!"

I like both filk and fan videos, especially the humorous ones, so I would definitely donate some spare money for that category prize if it would get the ball rolling.

Just noticed this: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/contests/l70etc-musicvideo/

Too bad the song sucks. Also too bad that they are apparently clueless about the demographics of music video makers. But this is a start.

I think it's harder to use filk songs as a whole for AMV because filk is sometimes specific to a particular item. Mainstream songs are much more generic. For example, what anime would you pair a song about Firefly to? (I know, Cowboy Bebop but I'm not sure how well it would fit plus CB has been overdone.)

But speaking just for myself, there's only so many hours in the day. My interest in anime started declining when I started playing MMORPG (along with the quality of anime I liked). It's difficult to do everything I want to do so anime dropped by the wayside. I used to download 150 MB of AMVs every week until late 2006. Then I forgot one week. That lead to forgetting a second week, then third, then I realized I wasn't as much into it as I thought. It's to bad, but I'm pretty sure there aren't many new videos for the anime I like anymore.

<picks self up off the floor after falling out of the chair giggling>

That was delightful. Somewhat disturbing to hear the voice of Tom Smith apparently coming out of the mouth of a cute anime chick (well, then again, 'cute' and 'anime chick' are frequently sort of redundant), but delightful nonetheless.

Thank you for reposting it here; if anyone had any doubts that you're not slamming the creator of the video, the fact that you're spreading it around yourself should dispell them.

of is the one someone took of you at GaFilk 2008 when you did "Operation Desert Storm" for me. It was given to me. With your permission, I'd like to use it as a "teaching tool" for a Filk 101 at Gaylaxicon this October.

If I had the time and software and skill (and video clips) to make filk music videos, I'd love to do "Dead Again". Better yet, do an original animation to "Smash the Frickin Fairies!". Of course I'd definitely include those three things you asked for. I'd do one better and put them at the beginning and ending of the video like TV credits. I even had an idea to add a crawler with where I got each clip as the clip shows up.
