First things first. A moment, to remember. As if we could ever forget.

Thanks.

Now.

Last week's GOP convention was pretty wild on several levels. Two of the wildest involved Keith Olbermann. Secondly, he and Chris Matthews have been demoted from anchoring future coverage, because tough manly-man über-soldier John McCain and hard-as-nails barracuda Sarah Palin said Keith and Chris were being waaaaah unfair.

Firstly, the Repubs had a "tribute" to 9/11. Which showed some of the carnage. Which we discussed here in this thread.

Which leads us to this.

Hah! I couldn't have said it more succiently myself. Ever since 9/11 actually occured the Republicans have been using it to further their goals. Bush showed that dangling the threat of 9/11 over our heads worked when we let him drop the fight against the Al Queda to invade Iraq and when we subsequently elected him to a second term. Fool us once, shame on you, fool us twice, shame on us.

Fool us a third time, and I'm moving to Canada. I have a really low opinion of the intelligence of my fellow Americans. As a case in point, the race between Obama and McCain is still a close one. If the people here were smart, it would't be.

He's right...and it makes me sick to my stomach that he is right on this matter.

Oh, and I've already had my moment of silence and reflection on "Prove You're A Patriot Day," or, as my roommate put it, "You mean the day where everyone pretends to have patriotism flowing through their veins and then it goes back to business as usual the very next day?"

Yeah, that quote has been making the rounds for awhile. Are you intending to hold Obama responsible for it, or something? Not that it's inaccurate or anything -- it simply puts your preferred candidate in some indirect bad light. Ohhh, you mean comparing Obama to Jesus. Y'know, this guy may have even intended to equate Obama with Jesus. Or he might have been trying to make a point that community service -- which, ahem, Governor Palin and the McCain campaign disparaged -- is, y'know, not a bad thing. But I suppose that is way too subtle. Not.

Sorry, but I presume you have a point to make, that being We All Think Obama Is The Second Coming. (Coulda sworn he was the Anti-Christ. Or a Muslim. Or somethin'.) Yet another installment in your never-ending series You Democrat Haters Are Just Like Or Worse Than Republicans No Really. And I will tell you that I'm about one more day-long hair-splitting from banning you. I think that's a reasonably fair warning.

I suppose that could be interpreted in a non-disparaging fashion. From where I sit, saying that somebody has no actual responsibilities brings images of somebody with a pretty title doing nothing worthwhile.

I try very hard to maintain some small measure of integrity and consistency and even temper. It's a little tricky when someone's constantly swatting at my nose, apparently just to stir up a reaction.

You've got one.

Y'know, I have tremendously close friends with whom I vehemently disagree politically. Sometimes we can talk about those things; sometimes we can't. We have, for the sake of our friendships, agreed to disagree... and, in many cases, to leave some subjects go. We cannot change each other's minds, and after awhile it simply is exhausting.

I have looked over other threads in which you have contributed (and they were contributions, in my eye, contrary to what you may think), and I find them... exhausting. No matter how many people doggedly point out a to you, you insist it's b or 3 or Oklahoma. You argue nuances in absolutes, and twist things out of context a little too often. It is indeed possible to refute the many points of argument, to continue the debate until the thread is worn down to a monofilament... but no one's opinion is going to be changed, no one's facts are going to be good enough. And I am, theoretically, trying to do other things with my day. I presume you are too.

At this point, as I have said I was going to ban you, I have to, at least for awhile. Two weeks, to catch my mental breath. At which point, you are once more welcome, for whatever it's worth, slate clean and let's start fresh.

I don't know that you will come back, though. Which will actually sadden me, though you may not believe it.

Another thing you may not believe is that I care about the truth. And I try to look at what is often referred to as The Big Picture. I despise how much effort and energy are going into some of the bullshit thrown around by the Republican party to defend Sarah Palin. I commented on another blog this morning that if the Repubs put a third of the energy into providing good government that they do into trying to score points, I and a lot of other liberal bloggers likely wouldn't have much to complain about. B

No matter what your stated political party, your chosen candidate... you seem to want to score points.

If you like, in two weeks we can discuss that some more. Or you can do it on your own LJ to your heart's content.

If I now have no intellectual integrity, if I am now petty, if I have been these things for a long time... well, it only confirms my own black opinion of myself, the one I try hard to disprove. So much for that.

Ah. so you're for Bob Barr.

Pity. That means I don't get to use my new argument that Republicans can't criticize Obama on messianic grounds any more, since they started worshipping Sarah Palin.

Republicans are scrambling to portray Obama as unpatriotic and unChristian. Seems to me fair game to point out that Christ believed in helping the poor (like the Democrats do), not spitting at them and punishing them to teach them what a mistake they are making by being poor (like the Republicans do). If that means Obama has more in common with Christ than McCain does, well, Republicans who claim to be religious might want to think that over.

Over on my own LJ, years ago, I pointed out the very same thing -- how the actions of Christ looked a lot like liberalism.

I mean, he feeds the multitude on loaves and fishes, rather than showing them how to fish. He heals the lame. He offers comfort to prisoners -- talk about being soft on crime!

And, of course, there's his hostility to business. Just look at that hoopla in the temple, with the moneylenders.
(Heck, in Jesus Christ, Superstar, he seems to REALLY have it in for the postcard vendor, whose stand he knocks over twice!)

Obviously I was wrong to respect your intellectual integrity.

*sigh*

Way over the top there Baladain.

If there's anybody in here who goes against the general political grain of Tom and many of the people who hang out here, it's me. There have been times I've disagreed with him. There have been times I've just rolled my eyes, stopped and said "Nope, not even gonna get into this one." I've never had any doubts about his integrity. I'd like to think he believes the same of me.

As for not listening to his music or giving away his CD's, that's just silly, not to mention chilidish. Hell, if I refused to listen to the music, read the books, or watch the movies of everyone who held differing political opinions than mine I'd have no entertainment at all. There are one or two people I absolutely refuse to give money to, but it's a very short list and the relatively mild disagreements I've had with Tom don't even put him on the same planet with those people.

I know you can't respond to this right now. If you really feel the need to bitch at me feel free to email me at bporter@runbox.com.

Who the bloody fuck do you think you are, and where do you get off pretending like you know what's going on in my mind?

Who am I?
Are you dense? Are you retarded or something?

I'm the goddamned Uncle Lumpy, bitch!

And you're yet another "South Park Independent" who claims to loathe and despise both of the Big Party candidates out of some delusion that it makes you "hep" while your actual demonstrations and vocalizations are RIDICULOUSLY one-sided and disproportionally focused against one candidate and not the other.

This leads me to suspect either one of two things;

1. You're a goddamned liar.
2. You only do that for the sake of causing grief and aggravation in Tom's LJ, which further causes me to suspect that you are, in fact, so utterly impotent and powerless in your own personal life that shit like this is the only way you're able to convince yourself that your own worthiness and viability as a human being.

Either way, you're fucked boy!

I wonder how Canada is these days.... if McCain becomes president because good people do nothing, be they the common person or the allegedly common people who happen to work in high places (like NBC), I really do not want to live in McCain's America. It would, I fear, at worst, start a snowball towards something much much worse than what we have now...

Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" anyone? I'd really prefer to keep the Vatican as the world's only Christian theocracy. And the way things are going, I think the founding fathers of the United States of America, who believed in the separation of church and state, are collectively rolling over in their graves and thinking maybe King George III wasn't so bad after all.
