Date: 2010-09-02 10:01 pm (UTC)I'm used to hurricanes - I used to live on Long Island. The year our house was built, I joked to the builders that I'd be checking the roof for leaks when the remnats of the hurricane came through. (Francine? Isabel?) They didn't believe me. next morning, it's teeming rain and I'm happily checking the roof in the master bedroom (only place I spotted one) and I find them all hunkered in the building office looking depressed. They weren't impressed by my "I told you it was coming...) But my house is nice & sturdy.
Now on LI is where my folks still are. THEY are checking things around their yard & battening down the hatches. Kory's family is also still mostly on the Island as well. as far as I know, they too are battening down. But in all cases the houses are sturdy & the inhabitants are old hands at weathering storms.
good news though, Earl doesn't look like he's going to gain much strength & is losing it rapidly. Or so we can all hope. at least we didn't get a blended storm of Earl, Danielle & Fiona massing together.
and Gaston also appears to have fizzled out.

Date: 2010-09-03 02:13 am (UTC)We lost power on my birthday once--I was pretty young, so my main memory is getting to eat cake early because we lacked the resources for the planned fancy dinner. Presents were early too, and by candlelight.
I worry about the people closer to the beach, or further south. For my parents, I'm pretty sanguine, but I still keep my fingers crossed.
