Hurricane Earl, that is. You can track it online with Weather Underground or The Weather Channel. If you're anywhere near the projected landfall path, please do GET THE HELL OUT NOW. Check up on each other, be safe, and let us know how you're doing.

A lot of us up and down the East Coast (mostly further south than me, granted) have been making Dixie Chicks jokes.

I realize this is hardly a laughing matter, but... I've been waiting for someone to say the phrase you titled this post with. *facepalms*

You know, not to sound smug or anything, but I'm always amazed when I hear about a hurricane set to hit the US and NOT projected to make landfall in Florida. (Yeah, I was in South Florida for Wilma...had a tree fall on my car for it too...).

Ohh man, a cat 4/5 hitting NYC would NOT be good...some of the older buildings wouldn't survive anything over a 3 I think...

I'm not expecting much more than rain here in mid maryland.

I'm used to hurricanes - I used to live on Long Island. The year our house was built, I joked to the builders that I'd be checking the roof for leaks when the remnats of the hurricane came through. (Francine? Isabel?) They didn't believe me. next morning, it's teeming rain and I'm happily checking the roof in the master bedroom (only place I spotted one) and I find them all hunkered in the building office looking depressed. They weren't impressed by my "I told you it was coming...) But my house is nice & sturdy.

Now on LI is where my folks still are. THEY are checking things around their yard & battening down the hatches. Kory's family is also still mostly on the Island as well. as far as I know, they too are battening down. But in all cases the houses are sturdy & the inhabitants are old hands at weathering storms.

good news though, Earl doesn't look like he's going to gain much strength & is losing it rapidly. Or so we can all hope. at least we didn't get a blended storm of Earl, Danielle & Fiona massing together.

and Gaston also appears to have fizzled out.

I'm in North Carolina. Two months ago, I planned my Birthday/Labor Day/Vacation - at the beach. I'm going. Hurricane, no hurricane, tsunami, firespout, wrathagawd - I'm EFFING GOING!

You see, this is the only vacation I'll get this year.

My parents are on Cape Cod, and about as well prepared for the hurricane as anyone can be. They've got a grill, a woodstove, good cross-ventilation, and the highest ground on the whole penninsula. We had a few Category 1s when I was growing up--you close the shutters, stock up on food and ice, and keep an eye out for falling branches.

We lost power on my birthday once--I was pretty young, so my main memory is getting to eat cake early because we lacked the resources for the planned fancy dinner. Presents were early too, and by candlelight.

I worry about the people closer to the beach, or further south. For my parents, I'm pretty sanguine, but I still keep my fingers crossed.
