I don't know if this is causal or not, but I saw links go by that said that neither the AP nor Fox News were going to give this airplay... homeboy can't get no notoriety. Couldn't happen to a better s.o.b.... :)
It's not like we were gonna bite. We just *are* gonna upstage him. Whether he actually turns out or not.
*sigh* I've been waiting for a good excuse to turn this day around for almost a decade. I just wish it had been a *really* good excuse and not this twit... but hey, 'twill suffice.
Imam Musri is not empowered to relocate Park51. That would be Imam Rauf, who just ran an Op Ed in the times that he can't relocate it without ceding the discourse to extremists on both sides, which is why he won't.
No, according to the article, that's what this "pastor" claimed. What the imam (not Musri) talking with him said was that Musri would *talk* with the pastor about it.
I think he's pulling an Oral Roberts. He says this, he gets to not have his display -- the threat of which has gotten him all the publicity he wanted, but actually doing it might land him in some serious hot water -- and then when the Park 51 project goes forth as scheduled, he gets to claim that those Dirty Muslims reneged on their word, which just PROVES he was right to say they couldn't be trusted.
I imagine this will keep going for a few days, what with the "they're totes gonna call of the mosque and I HELPED!" versus "um, no one said that, shove it."
Did you see the part where the pastor was saying how no one should burn Qurans, it would be a bad idea? O_o
My guess is that the Pastor is claiming to have forced the masque to move so that he doesn't look like he is backing down. If people believe that he forced the evil muslims to move their terrorist training camp, then he can look strong and not like an idiot. Very few people come out every Sunday to listen to someone they think is an idiot. Or maybe he just wants to be able to continue to pretend he isn't an idiot, even if he's the only one who doesn't see the truth.
I'd say it too. My only opposition to the burning was that it violated local fire codes. That means if they did it, there would be a risk of burning things you don't want burned. I wouldn't agree with what he's doing, but in America you have the right to be an asshole; we also have the right to call him out on being an asshole.
I want to start a new relegion. Page one of the book would bring up that "I am thy Lord, thy God, Thou Shalt Not Have Any Gods Before Me" into a proper focus. Nothing can be holier than God, including this book. Buildings, statues, holy relics, holy bibles can be revered, but they should not become more important than those other commandments about killing and such.
First--The Koran burning is the third good example in the last month that just because you have the right to do something in America, it doesn't mean you should. (The first two being the building of the Islamic Center where 70% of the nation wishes it not to go, the second being Glenn Beck's speech on the location and anniversary of the MLK Dream Speech.)
A generation or two ago, no one would have done any of those three things because it "wouldn't have been nice." I miss that.
Secondly--No one here (or in the media at large) said a negative word when noted atheist blogger and scientist PZ Meyer (http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/) stole and desecrated a Catholic host as well as burned his own copy of the Koran.
Seems to me that it's the fact that a heretical Christian sect is doing it, rather than what, exactly, they're doing, that's got folks up in arms. Or is it that Muslims shoot back when you mess with their religion?
Turnin' the other cheek seems to be counterproductive to being left the hell alone......
Oh, this is absolutely hilarious. I didn't realize when I linked to Dr. Meyer's blog that the second article was a screed *encouraging* the Minister to burn Korans if he wanted to.
I couldn't come up with irony that rich if I wrote this reality into existence in the first place.
Pastor Steve Stone at Heartsong Church here in the Memphis area(the freakin' heart of the bible belt for goodness sakes!) that made the national news the last couple of days. They're letting the local Muslim community use the church for their ceremonies/services while their mosque is still being built.
Heartsong is a really cool church, pretty progressive - they have let the Barony of Grey Niche hold their annual Lugh festival there in the past.
Stories like this are I haven't given up hope for humanity yet. There are still good, decent people in all walks of life and systems of belief.
He finally realized he was interfering with Gator football Saturday. That's sacriledge around here! Perhaps he could move his foolishness to Tallahassee, and mess up the Seminoles! Go Gators!
Last night I heard he was reconsidering again because he claims the imams made a deal with him that they are now violating. The imams claim they agreed to talk about the whole matter, not that any promise was made to move the mosque away from Ground Zero (and it isn't even AT Ground Zero!!!). So we still have no clue what Shmuckface is gonna do...
The Koran itself states that it must not be translated. Any translation is not the Koran, by its own rule. Therefore the English texts displayed by the wackjob, oops, I mean Pastor, are not Korans, therefore they are not holy. He might as well burn a dictionary.
Another side note, the local Fire Department has said that burning dangerous chemicals is not allowed, and the ink in the books may contain said chemicals. They say they will be present and do what they need to do to protect the area. I fantasize about the Pastor throwing the match and then getting hit by a full pressure fire hose blast.
I asked for "and received" a free Koran, English and Arabic interlinear, printed in Saudi Arabia of all places. It says that its not "official" but I'm guessing its hard to proselytize if you cant get the language across to people.
OK. Please. Just do me one favor. It won't take more than 30 seconds from your day, honest.
Go to Amazon and search "Koran translations." Then tell me what you get.
From what I have been able to glean, mainstream Islamic thought considers translations of the Koran to be "interpretations" of the Arabic, but this is really not all that different from the use of Latin in the early Christian church. Remember when vernacular Bibles were shocking and appalling? (And, to the verrry right wing of the Catholic Church, they still are....)
