If you're in the eastern half of the United States right now, you're likely to get somewhere between six inches and two feet of snow (if you're to the north) or and inch or more of freezing rain (if you're in the middle) or flaming dustbunnies and rancid taco chips (if you're in my head on a Tuesday night). Much negative wind chill is expected. If you ain't ready to hunker down for a day or three, GET READY NOW DAMMIT.

I'm actually more-or-less all set. Gas in the car, food in the pantry and fridge, bottles of filtered water, comforters and ceramic heaters, cell phone and laptop batteries charged. (And a crank-powered weather radio-flashlight). How's your hidey-hole lookin'?

(And, ten points to whoever recognizes the completely-non-weather-related quote in the subject line.)

I have at least one stack of firewood in the house (more outside) in case the power goes out and we got a bunch of food from Costco the other day so provided we keep the faucets cracked in case of freezing we're okay.

I really need to put together a disaster kit for the house similar to a bugout bag just in case.

On the food front, we're good. The Him had to go to work. I already asked for time off, so I don't have to get the 1/4 to 1/2 inch coating of ice off my car. I did have to chip out the door we usually use to enter the house. It had over an inch of ice in front of it.

Do you realize that the top Google response to "what's that white stuff, man?" is this thread? 2'nd highest one is the entire website "what do white people like". Amazing that Google can search out stuff and list it that quickly.

When I went to the NASFiC Archon a few years ago, I did go to the nearby Waffle House at 2 AM, but I cheated. I ordered hash browns with cheese and vegetables.

IIRC, all of the light bulbs worked.

Here in Wisconsin, my meetings for the rest of the week are being rescheduled. I doubt I'll be going to the Day Job tomorrow, and I'm ready for a nice winter nap at home.

BTW: my puppy loves the snow. Nibbler will launch himself off the porch to go "swimming" in the white stuff when I take him outside.

Ahh, life is blessed.

We're on the rain side of it here in S. Indiana...we're supposed to get thunderstorms tonight and a lot of wind, but no snow and only a fraction of a freezing rain chance. So, no slipping and sliding, but plenty of drudging through downpours.

And my friend out West talking about how nice it is out there right now...grrr...

Stay safe, everyone!

It's already begun here in Kansas City, MO. We've gotten about 3-4 inches in the last 4 hours and it's really dry, light snow that's being blown all over the place by the rather high wind.

We've got a few days' worth of food and I expect that the city will have us dug out by tomorrow morning since there's a mayoral election in six months!

Just checked the 10-day forecast for my area. What, there's rain coming? Good, we can always use it. And with the nightly temps I saw predicted, I won't even have to cover up my plants or take them in. Maybe I'd better make sure I still fit into my swimsuit...we'll be getting highs in the upper 60s and 70s over the next couple of weeks after all...

flaming dustbunnies and rancid taco chips

On the other hand, if the dustbunnies are going to catch fire, I have a SERIOUS problem.

I'll be vacuuming the house. Bye.

We just got "upgraded" to a Level 3 weather alert. A lot of freezing rain hit this morning and more is on the way. Luckily Bill's university closed down early and he was able to record lecture notes on today's subject for the students. And here's hoping that they'll close down tomorrow as well. MFP's husband's university also closed down before he had to fight the weather. Damn I was hoping to get through a winter without ice...Oh well..as long as we keep power...tomorrow I may be driven to "cookie baking"...oh the horror. Stay warm all..

I don't expect to lose power in my neighborhood -- the infrastructure is pretty sturdy here -- but I stopped at the store on the way home to buy some "doesn't need refrigeration or cooking" food, just in case.

Before leaving work, I told my boss I'd probably be able to make it in, since my commute is along a route that's high priority for snow clearance. He glowered at me in a way that clearly said, "Don't be stupid." So if the roads are as bad as he expects them to be, I shall stay off them.

First my train was late arriving (so it was late leaving) then due to switching problems we were stuck in the same spot for over an hour. We saw several trains pass by us. Then when we arrive at my station (about 90 minutes late) I had to face the snow and wind to the mostly empty parking lot. At least there wasn't any ice on my car and I was able to drive home safely (but it felt like I was one of the last people on the planet). Except the garage door wouldn't close. Something was wrong with the sensor so once it went down, it went back up. This went on for several times until it stayed down.

I just started with this company and after 12 weeks of being out of work, I wasn't really ready for a day of (unpaid) vacation. But I sort of wished for one you know, after all that crap. Well I got my wish, my boss called and said she just got word that the office is closed tomorrow. For the third time in its history (the second time was due to 9/11). I'm just a good luck charm aren't I? :)

Anyway I'm spending tomorrow at home where it's warm and giving lots of attention to my cats who missed me terribly today.
