For the past few days, there have been a frightening number of tornadoes hitting the midwest and moving into the southeast. Today, the Carolinas and Virginia have been nailed, a lot of damage and some lives lost. If you're in that and you're sheltered and you can get this post, STAY HUNKERED DOWN. The warnings are up until at least 9:00 p.m. EDT. And, once you can get online more consistently, sound off so we know you're okay. I'm speaking especially to my friends in Greensboro and Raleigh and Williamsburg, as well as Allison, [personal profile] jannyblue, [profile] bfeist and a few other folks. Be safe, and let us know where you are and how you're doin'.

Downtown Raleigh is a bit trashed with tree limbs and garbage cans and road equipment scattered about, but I didn't see any major structural damage as of an hour ago. Power lines down all over the place, though.

Well, some of my Raleigh friends have tree limbs through their houses and cars. So there was some structural damage. :/

I'm completely unscathed, and it looks like the storm's split to either side of Alexandria and DC, so I expect to remain so.

There's been some pretty strong wind, and I think I heard thunder once or twice, but that's about it. Not even a flicker in the power.

Though I made sure to park away from the trees in the parking lot that I'm convinced are just waiting to fall over... No idea if they have or not, though I suppose I could check...

It's been wet and windy at various times over here in Rockville/Gaithersburg, but nothing too exciting.

we've had tornado warnings for the past 90 min passing south & east of us.
it's been raining heavily & thunderstorms all day. I think things have missed us by the current quiet.

outside visuals just show a lot of wet as far as I can tell - it IS dark.

Thank you for asking!

Checking in from Williamsburg. We had heavy wind and rain in my neighborhood, but the power stayed on; it looks like we're done with the storms at this time.

We got a call a little while ago, it seems a tornado touched down a house away from [livejournal.com profile] rtred's parent's house in Gloucester. Their power is out, but they've come through safely. Apparently the middle school in town was hit, the middle of the building is gone. Eepa!

We're okay, not far from Allison and [livejournal.com profile] jannyblue, but we'll see if there was any damage closer to home when we get back there.

Safe here (in southwestern part of WV). We got to see two days of the system, as we were in northern AL on Friday and spent all day Saturday driving back home. There were *nasty* looking clouds over us pretty much the whole way, though all we got while driving was mild rain and heavier than usual cross breezes here and there.

Friday was really damn scary though. Getting ready to go back to the hotel at around 6 PM-ish, and the light outside was a sickly orange-yellow tinged with green. This was made worse by the fact that there was no wind whatsoever. I spent the next hour waiting for the tornado sirens in Madison county to start wailing.

We're fine :} We got to watch some awesome lightning & street flooding while comfortably drinking tea, but everything was coming in waves so it was easy to time our travel for between bouts of rain.

Several neighborhoods around here were devastated. My neighborhood had quite a few trees knocked down, including 2 from my neighbors yard. One decided to die across our driveway, and it took most of Saturday and the grace of some incredibly kind neighbors to get the driveway itself cleared.

We still have the top of the tree in our front yard, and the trunk of this huge sucker on the other side, and I'm just not sure right now how that's going to be cleared, since we can't really afford a tree clearing service. Power got put back up that night, thanks to some dedicated Alabama Power workers.

House is fine, power's on, and we can get in and out of the driveway, so we're happy and thankful. I wish I could do more for my more devastated neighbors.
