Hurricane Irene has been taking its sweet time about landfall, but it's finally done so. weatherdude and others have lots of info and video at Hurricane Kos, and of course there's Weather Underground.

If you are anywhere in the path of this beast -- from North Carolina up through Massachusetts -- HUNKER DOWN OR GET OUT NOW. And ignore the flippin' morons who are saying, "Aw, it's down to a Category One, it ain't so bad." In a heavily populated area, yes, it is so bad.

So far so good here. Very wet, but winds are gusty instead of sustained. Haven't heard thunder or seen lightning yet. Planes are still flying into DCA (I saw one go by 10 minutes ago)

Power and water are still on, but I'm avoiding the elevators just in case. Besides, half of them are "reserved"... There are two families who are moving out of the building today, and I want to let them have as many elevators as possible so they can get out fast.

Hmmm...not sure I'd want to be on one of those planes. Me and turbulence do not get along well.

That plane I saw around 2pm tuned out to be the last one, actually. Heh.

I am not a fan of flying in general, so I totally hear you on the turbulence thing...

A thousand-mile-wide storm is a bad storm regardless of its hurricane category.

I'm in Rhode Island, hopefully far enough away from the ocean to avoid the surge. We've been getting rain all day on and off, but we're expecting the worst tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

We're okay here so far -- hunkered down and paying attention to warnings.

Lots of rain. I'm really close to the water (just about 100 yards off the Chesapeake Bay) and we've had regular rain lately so the ground's wet, I have sheets & kitty litter around the basement door & am worried about seepage. Otherwise other than random power outages it's been OK, the huge tree branch over the roof hasn't been a problem yet & hopefully it stays that way.

Weather Underground's projected storm surge overlay suggests you may be about to acquire a swimming pool. Good luck!

We got a couple of inches on the ground, minor leakage in to the basement (the house itself is over 8" off the ground), lots of downed limbs, and some roof damage. Not TOO serious, thankfully.

Here in N. VA, local TV is saying we're at about the midpoint. All good here so far -- *very* surprised we haven't lost at least 1 of power, cable or internet. No trees toppled yet.

Never before saw sheets of water flowing down my street, though.

OTOH, Annapolis, Ocean City & the rest of coastal MD are getting hammered. I'd hate to be one of the Ren Fest performers in the staff campground tonight...

The thing to recall is that in the phrase "Category one Hurricane" the important word is "Hurricane"... I've been checking Weather Underground from time to time to see what the track is doing. I'm also in California, so mostly just praying for all you folks on the East Coast. And the ponies on Assateague for that matter (yes, I read that book when I was a kid.)
