I was and am a fan of Muhammad Ali. Hell of a fighter, hell of a human being.

Someone that big needed a nemesis as big. And that was Joe Frazier.

Smokin' Joe. One of the hardest hitters the boxing game had ever seen. Hard enough to break Ali's jaw. Hard enough to put Ali down.

And hard enough to make Ali reach inside himself as never before to come back and beat him.

Their three bouts became the stuff of legend. Especially the Thrilla in Manila. What a frickin' match.

Joe Frazier has passed away at the age of 67. Condolences to his friends and family. He had a huge life, and will not be forgotten.

I want to make it perfectly clear that I despise boxing. I believe the world would be a better place if boxing had never been invented. Leaving this to one side, however, the world is also a better place because one can mention "expert boxer, universally respected" and *not* be talking about Mike Tyson! Also, now that I am 62, it is just far, far too easy for me to see age 67 as being too young to go. My condolences to those who will miss Joe Frazier, and let us hope that as boxing evolves, we have far more Joe Fraziers, Muhammad Alis, and fewer Mike Tysons.

It was a little kid moment from me, but I always remembered this advertisement he did. It was his "Thanks Mean Joe" moment.

So I was on the phone last night as the tweets started coming in. And I couldn't interrupt the conversation I was having to tell [livejournal.com profile] gridlore. So I grabbed a pen....

(The punditgirls on the Twitter machine had just been talking the other day about whether or not Keith would retire the Cosell impression when Frazier passed. I guess we'll find out.)
