If you're reading this on LiveJournal, you know that things have gone just a bit worng.

This morning, our LJ Overlords, in their infinite wisdom, rolled out new functionality for the comments. In doing so, they have pretty much broken comments instead.

No subject lines. No preview (remember that the preview includes spellcheck and HTML check). No selecting icons by drop-down -- you have to pick them from a window where they're loaded in order of the dates they were uploaded. No "thread" option.

I'm already crossposting at DreamWidth. It will take no effort to migrate. I would rather not, but this is silly.

ETA: Okay, I've changed the header color so that user names are legible in comments. Yeesh.

While I set up a DW account long ago, I haven't put the time in to establish connections with all "my folks" yet, nor the habit of checking. But it seems like every week or two there's another outcry on LJ.

I suppose it's time to *make* the time.

I just made a DW account today. Looks like LJ is on it's last legs.

Use an S2 style and they are all still there!

I'm using an S2 style. The problem is custom comment pages -- if you has them, everything's hosed. I've temporarily changed it to "Disable Custom Comment Page" so I can have back my dropdown and subject line and preview.

I thought it was the other way around! I have the default comment page and nothing works at all. :( But I have an S1 journal still, so maybe that's it.

There must be some other variable in play along with those. I've set "Disable customized comment pages for your journal" to 'yes' and still have the new comment form. (While, obviously, yours is back to the familiar layout.)

Maybe something to do with the specific style...?

I'm a doof -- I misspoke. You have to set that to "no". It's confusing. Sorry.

Not your fault, and still not the whole story since it was 'no' -- with crud enabled -- when I tried to "fix" it. I found a post (http://advancing.livejournal.com/133124.html) that seems to confirm that there's a "which style are you using" component to the results.

That I can sympathize with. LJ has been passed around more times than a Thai hooker.

Well, if you use google translate to figure out their reasoning for this, it's because:

Main objective: to make a comfortable, but do not dilute the cosmic pretzel.

Which makes everything clearer, really.

Now I want a cosmic pretzel. It'll be like those cosmic brownies they sell - covered in chocolate with fake M&Ms all over it.

Doesn't everyone do that? I think once we discovered fries+Frosties = deliciousiousness in grade school, fries and ice cream of any sort became a staple around here.

Ah, but it's mostly the hot fudge, not the ice cream, that's the key. I wonder why fast food joints don't put hot fudge fries on the menu.

Yeah, the roleplaying side of LJ has flipped their collective shit six ways from Sunday over this. It's friggin' nuts all around.

Some people fumble the ball. LJ threw this one right out of the stadium.

I decided to comment just to see what would happen...it seems to work fine here, but maybe if you have a lot of icons, it wouldn't be as easy (I just have three, clearly named, so the drop-down bar works fine for me).

Subject Line

From: [identity profile] alverant.livejournal.com
Well I admit it's different. My browser has a spelling function built in so I don't need LJ's spellcheck. I do see a checkbox on the bottom for a preview too. I can't say I'm a fan of dreamwidth either, but it could be because it's different. Right now my main complaint is not having the comments box at the bottom of the screen by default. I have to click a link first.

Sorry to confuse, m'friend. I have been posting at DW for about a year; it automatically cross-posts to LJ, which automatically sends it to Facebook. Nothing I do will change, but if this new LJ style becomes The Standard, I have the suspicion I'll be recommending everyone comment over at DW.

I've also go a permanent account, and some communities I read are screwed up. I just set it so everything shows up in my style, and it all works properly again, for me at least.

Not seeing much change here.

Hmmmm... I've got a free account, and I'm not seeing much in the way of changes. The Picture To Use drops down a list (in alphabetical order). There's a clicky-box box to "check spelling and preview". There is a place for a subject line. So it all looks pretty much the same as before. Lets look at "More Options" now...

OK, the actual BUTTON for "Preview" was behind the "More Options" button. That may be a change - and there is still a clicky-box for "Check Spelling during preview" like there used to be. I've still got a subject line.

So with my account, there seems to be very little changed. Maybe it only affects Premium Accounts. Is that their business plan - keep the people with free accounts happy while pissing off the paying customers?

When I added my little particle to the shit-storm at [livejournal.com profile] lj_reviews, it was complaint #8397 on page 127 of comments. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if LJ just decides to "tough it out" & pin their hopes on users who like Facebook-like features (emphasis on videos & photos, no extensive comments or nesting, no desire to proofread what you've written, etc.). Y'know: knee-jerk comments & instant visuals by half-literate folks with the attention spans of gnats.

Who, me, cynical?!? Naaaaaahh....
