In this story about a man who, while teaching gun safety, shot himself, what gets me is not the circumstance, but his utterly clueless quote:
"It's an unfortunate accident," Toumey said. "I've always been very, very safe."
Isn't overconfidence the cause of many accidents? Goodness knows that's how I screw up. Reading this, all I can think of are jokes with punchlines like "Nope, no problem, I got i-", "They couldn't hit an elephant at this dis-", and "Hey, y'all! Watch this!"

Sounds like he forgot Rule One of safe firearms:

1. The weapon is always loaded, cocked, with no safety. Treat it that way. Unless the weapon is in pieces, or you can see the empty chamber with your own eyes, you treat a weapon as ready to fire.
