Great sadness. Comedian Soupy Sales has passed away at the age of 83. Either you don't know who he was or why he was funny, or you absolutely do.

What are your favorite kinds of pie? Nothing beats a good apple for me, but peach can also be lovely.

Great sadness. He was unique. He was recognized as the world expert in pies to the face, once brought in as an expert witness in a trial.

I'm a lemon merangue guy, when it comes to pie.

lard...

Then tenderest crumb in pretty much *all* baking comes from lard :-) Trust me -- there's a whole section in college level Food Chemistry devoted to various fats and *why*. Short answer; has to do with fat vs protein vs moisture ratios. Long answer; I'd have to look up and don't have the books to hand.

I paid $700 in 1980s dollars to learn that (except the Gram taught me as a kid, too, but not the why). I share it now for free :-)

Apple, definitely. Though chocolate creme will do, too. Or custard.

And Batya makes a great chicken pot pie.

Rest well, Soupy.

Remind me shortly before you get to Seattle in Jan and I'll bake you one of my "Super Magick Tongue Tickling Apple Pies". I'm not just some random geek-grrl (well, I am, but...) [livejournal.com profile] s00j and [livejournal.com profile] vixyish and [livejournal.com profile] stealthcello and [livejournal.com profile] tfabris and [livejournal.com profile] technoshaman and... some number of other people of our mutual acquaintance can vouch for my cooking.

I'll vouch for her... especially if I can help eat pie. :)

Personally, pecan, pumpkin, key lime, and mincemeat among the sweets, and chicken pot and shepherds among the savories... but I will not turn down a well-done apple ([livejournal.com profile] doragoon provided one to our last Jam which was VERY yummy; she used a lot of ginger, and didn't get it all smoothly crushed, which made for an INTERESTING variation... (no, if it's not *too* intense, I *like* biting into a chunk of candied ginger... woo!)... she was complaining about the fact that they've changed Crisco and that she might just have to go back to good old fashioned lard for the crust... but boy do I digress...)

But PIE in general is a Happy Thing, which is why they're a regular feature of Jam...

(Or, as [livejournal.com profile] cflute says when it comes to difficult decisions like "which pie", "Embrace the power of AND...")

PIE!

(Oh, and Tom, if the January weather gets to you out here, [livejournal.com profile] ladyallyn also knows where to get Tea that will cure what ails'ya... [livejournal.com profile] s00j can vouch for that, too...)

Last summer the Detroit Historical Museum had an exhibit on "classic TV celebrities". Of course Soupy Sales was included. I'm sorry I missed their Soupy Sales film festival, though.

I had a slice of surprisingly good pumpkin pie yesterday, from a bake sale to buy "extras" for the child-care center here at work. My favorite pie? Tough call ... cherry, I'd say.

And pie...I like pie...my favorite flavor of pies are my mamaw's homemade Butterscotch pie (she makes the crust and filling from scratch) and her cherry pie. *nomnomnomnom*

I like lemon meringue, though since I really like the filling best I usually just make myself a batch of lemon curd once in a while and dunk shortbread cookies in it.

I'm also a fan of pecan pie, though I need to avoid corn syrup now. Swapping out pure maple syrup would be expensive and probably mess with the texture a little, but if that's the only thing I am asked to bring to a gathering, I may just give it a go.

Okay, I added lots of water (well, broth) to my poverty stew, so now I can have soup for lunch. A couple of DVDs will have to watched later, one an A&E Biography of Soupy another of a 'Best of' clips, both home-made transfers from VHS tapes to DVDs.

Alas, there was no video tape around in 1953, or not yet viable for local stations, so no video of Soupy's shows here in Detroit. A few stills show some of him on set, and I think I seen a home movie, made public a few years ago, taken by crew or a visitor of the WXYZ set.

Rest in Pies Peace Milton Supman. Best comfort to his family and friends.

French silk. I'm a sucker for anything that's smooth and chocolatey, with whipped cream on the top.

Of the two-crust pies, I really love apple the best. There are really almost no types of pie I don't like.

RIP Soupy. I'm old enough to have actually watched his show when it went national. Funny, funny stuff.

Rhubarb! Or strawberry-rhubarb. Also lemon meringue.

But really? I'll eat almost any kind of pie.

Here's a really yummy one:

Cranberry Apple Pie

3 cups diced, peeled apples
1 cup cranberries
1-1/2 cups sugar
3 T Minute tapioca
1/4 tsp salt
a refrigerated pie crust (top and bottom crusts)
1 T butter or margarine

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix fruit, sugar, tapioca, and salt. Let stand
15 min.

Line a 9-inch pie plate w/one of the pie crusts.
Fill w/fruit mixture.
Dot w/butter or margarine
Arrange lattice strips out of second crust over fruit mixture.

Bake 1 hr or until juices form bubbles that burst slowly. Cool. Makes 8
servings.

Soupy was fun, but what was amazing was the number of absolutely top-of-the-line A-list stars that would participate. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and so on sharing a pie or two (dozen) with him.

For me, for dessert pies: pumpkin (with double spices), apple and cherry lead the way. All warm, ala mode.

For meals, chicken pot pie is great, as is a good pizza pie.

For eating...pecan.

But for throwing...coconut cream. Pretty, especially if it has toasted coconut on top, delicious enough to lick it off, little likelihood of staining (unlike chocolate cream).
