Eschaton aimed me to the Big Brass Blog, which has a lovely example of the fair and open-minded sort of "thinking" going on at Free Republic. In brief, some guy got his knickers in a twist because his priest said in a homily at Mass that he respects the parents of gays and lesbians. The guy grabbed his kids and left, and asked his Freeperville buddies if he'd done the right thing. Their answers are as enlightening as the original post, and you don't have to give Free Republic the browser hit. :)

Update: ePluribus Media has a diary at Daily Kos which is pretty much a compendium of some of the stuff Freeperville has been saying and doing re: Cindy Sheehan. Truly fascinating stuff, if sickening and unintentionally hilarious.

Yeah, don't give Free Republic the hit. Instead, read it at a site that inlines images using bandwidth they aren't paying for. Great.

I admit that I understand none of the technicalities of blogads and inline images. I just can't stand Free Republic....

Voices in the wilderness

There were a couple of responses that demonstrated an IQ higher than the humidity in the Sahara in June. Specifically I'm thinking of
"Just a simple question? As a Christian, would you want your own son 'out' (as in shunned from society) if he told you he was gay? Would you never speak to him again? I'm just interested to know your response...as a Christian."
and
"Dick Cheney is the parent of a gay woman."

They were a couple of voices in the wilderness of knee-jerk (emphasis on the jerk) responses, but it is important to note that there were some dissenting opinions presented.

Out of curiosity, are eyeballs/hits still worth money these days? Does using bandwidth from the FR site cost them more than the hits get them?

I genuinely don't know about bandwidth costs. TSO is on a provider that gave me a bucketload of bandwidth, specifically so I don't have to worry about it.

Personally, I know I just wouldn't want to have Free Republic in my History folder. It'd put me that much closer to an ulcer every time I had to look at the URL.

Heck, I already do a rather unpleasant double take every time I visit the Detroit Free Press' website.

See also this article in WingNutDaily, which boils down to "Dear fellow WND columnist: so you got called a chickenhawk. But did you really have to write two columns about it? Oh, and by the way, it's not just liberals who use the term `chickenhawk'. Members of the military feel the same way about people who advocate war but won't serve, except their term doesn't end in `hawk'. And since you've been advocating the invasion of Iraq since the beginning but have no intention of joining the military, I think the term is quite appropriate."

For those who don't want to give WND hits, see this summary at Operation Yellow Elephant.
