Lovely weekend at ConClave. Many, many, many thanks to Tom, Liz, and ever-damn-body. You are my tribe, and I love you all.
Busy, busy night and tomorrow. Must finish two commission projects. Later in week, must finish last two songs from The Last Hero On Earth.
But.
I just now finished watching the pilot episode of Firefly.
I don't know yet if it's as good as Babylon 5 or American Gothic.
But.
Damn.
So that's what you all have been talking about.
Damn.

Date: 2005-10-10 12:46 am (UTC)American Gothic, I will be able to give an opinion on once it's out on DVD.
Firefly is also excellent.
Room in the `verse for lots of shiny.
And SERENITY? Waaaaaaaaay shiny.

Date: 2005-10-10 01:08 am (UTC)Watch the entire series, then watch the movie. You'll see why.
Yeah, it's a good movie. I still want to slap Joss Whedon upside the head.

Date: 2005-10-10 05:04 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong; I adored B5. (Okay, maybe not season five. But 1-4? Genius.) But Firefly. Holy cow. Omigod, so much with the shiny. Plus, B5 very rarely looked at the underbelly of the 'verse. ("By Any Means Necessary," and one of the best eps of five, the one from the POV of the maintenance guys notwithstanding.) Firefly is all about being on the raggedy edge of the 'verse, or at least the series is. I have my doubts about the movie, but I think if Joss had had a season to tell it, it would have been much more about the raggedy edge, and much less about the high tech. But that's edging into TMI/spoilers stuff, so I'll stop there. Suffice to say, I think that the Firefly people are very everyman, and the main B5 people are shading towards the heroic. (Though, as I write this, I think I might be wrong.)
Hrm. Maybe I need to rewatch my B5s

Date: 2005-10-10 05:51 am (UTC)I envy you, going to watch it for the first time.
IMO it's better than B5, but I only got to about middle first season of B5. Then again, Firefly caught me from episode one....
I can't wait to see the movie myself.

Date: 2005-10-10 01:01 pm (UTC)Trying to compare it to B5, and I love B5 too, well... it's so strange to try. Apples to oranges. Chocolate and prime rib. Really good thing, and... other really good thing. My similes are borked, but it's a tasty piece to add indeed, either way. ("Out of Gas" still makes me cry... oh, so good.)

Date: 2005-10-10 08:21 pm (UTC)I'm going to OVFF. I'm expecting that if you keep watching this show, you'll have some songs there....
(Now, we need to somehow get Leslie Fish a copy of the DVDs...)

Date: 2005-10-11 04:07 am (UTC)i really like out of gas, and objects in space, River shines in that one. and Our Mrs. Reynolds, and.. well, I don't think there is a bad episode in the lot. On some you get a good picture of life on a core world, how society works, others have great moments of character development, or show some aspect that we haven't seen. It's all shiny.
I've only met 1 person that didn't like Serenity, and they just ain't right.

Date: 2005-10-11 07:02 pm (UTC)Because I am speculating about the likelihood of you writing Firefly songs.
Of which there aren't anything like enough.
Glee, I say. GLEE.

Date: 2005-10-12 07:15 pm (UTC)My main problem isn't with the plots, the characters, or the dialog. Rather, it's mainly the fact that what with the spaceships, energy weapons, and computers, I thought it was going to be a SF series, but it turned out to be a western.
If Whedon wanted to make a western, that's fine, but then why throw in all the skiffy props? Why not just use stagecoaches in the western US states? Or if he wanted to make a western-SF crossover, then he should've included some SF in the mix.
Okay, there was some SF. The government slicing up the girl's brain, for instance, but IIRC that only showed up at the end, in an episode that never aired. And the "out of gas" episode doesn't directly translate to horses or mules. But those are the exception rather than the rule. Mostly, it was just a straight western with very few changes, and no SF to speak of.

Yeah, exactly. Sorry to say I missed the Big Damn Movie--what with all the working and moving and whatever, going to the movies fell somewhere between picking lint off my sweater and cataloging my twist-tie collection. But still...yeah. The Joss he does good work.
