When I was much much younger I used to great the day with enthusiasm of the bright shiny future before me. These days I dread waking up because another thing will be broken or dead. :-(

Is it too much to ask that people just "not kill"? I mean there are tons of other ways to settle things but it's like people just don't see them these days.

If we don't watch ourselves we're going to tear this world apart before we can get off of it.

Unfortuantely you know this is also going to give Bushco just one more thing to stick their hands in. Not to mention distract the sheeple with...

Okay, that's going over the line.

"Hot tempered middle-eastern types"? "Muslim fanatics"? Yeah, nothing like our psychotic right-wing trailer-trash blogosphere, Ann Coulter, Hannity, O'Reilly, Ingraham, Hume, etc., etc., etc. Or our oh-so-sweet-and-wonderful Dr. James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Franklin Graham, etc., etc., etc.

And the biggest dictator-trying-to-make-himself-look-better I can think of is George W. Bush. Unless, of course, you consider him Cheney's sock puppet, which is entirely understandable.

As I see it, one of the horrific side effects of the sort of Terrorism that makes the front pages of the papers is the insidious way people start distrusting all members of a particular group -- some Christians are wack-jobs, so let's mock all Christians; some Muslims are violent, so let's be mean to all Muslims; some members of [ethnic or religious group] are bastards, so let's hate all members of [ethnic or religious group].

Some humans are a total waste of skin and air; most aren't. Most humans are just like us, just trying to get by and enjoy life in peace.

I may be wrong, but I think he was including himself in the "hot tempered middle-eastern types"(I know him), and whether he was or not, I would include myself in that category.

Right now I'm ranging from hoping I don't get called up to hoping the Lebanese get a hold of their country and stop letting Hizbullah make their foreign policy for them to hoping to see Hassan Nasrallah blown up for trying to f**k with us just because Syria and/or Iran told him too.

And I've got to ask, why does this too have to be about the American right? Maybe it's about The Israeli right or the Lebanese or Syrian or Iranian right?

Actually I *was* talking about both my people(I'm an Israeli) and the Arabs when refering to "hot tempered middle eastern types", myself included.And if you don't believe Hizbullah and Hamas are muslim fanatics- more power to you, but unfortunately you're wrong.And it is unfortunate- for us, for the Lebanese people and for the Palestinians, 'cause if they were non-fanatics we may have been able to actually talk things over with them and get this mess sorted out in, say, a decade- to the profit of everyone involved.

That's the whole "everybody not kill everybody else" thing. A dream I know but a worthwhile one in my opinion. The key word there is everybody.

Unfortunately getting people to stop all at once is not realistic.

There was this weird book I read called The Nexus (http://shorterlink.org/874) in which one of the things that happens is that everyone is forced by their own needs to solve world hunger.

How? They suddenly feel everyone's hunger on the planet. Everyone.

I think that if people could feel the pain of those they kill or hurt they wouldn't do so - out of their own self-interest.

All right for the hundred and fifty billionth time Lo tirtzach the supposed hebrew of "don't kill" AKA the first language the bible was written in (So in some sense the authorotative one.) means thou shalt not MURDER. The meaning of which I'm willing to bet most people (on this forum at least) don't want to extend to include self defense. I'm sorry the King James bible is badly translated. BELIVE ME I'm REAALY SORRY about it. It is, however, a very bad translation of a crucial word. Ask any bible scholar and they'll tell you that. While I certainly have my opinions about who is really involved in self defense and who is pushing aggression, (although I certainly have my biased opinion). But please don't believe me on this go to your local university and ask some bible scholars! Reserach it!

When a society frowns upon free expression and everyone is expected to fall lock-step with some dogmatic, psuedo-religious mumbo-jumbo upon penalty of imprisonment... Or worse... It is inevitable that such a society shall stagnate due to a stoppage of new ideas, which leads to intolerance and the adoption of and adherence to regressive social practices.

A society such as this is not long for the world. In time, it shall crumble from within or make the mistake of instigating retaliation from a more advanced and capable society, which shall lead to either it's elimination or it's assimilation.

Which is why, for all its woes and troubles (oh, brother), I am still thankfull that I live in a nation such as America, where free expression, artistic and otherwise, while not always appreciated, is still, for the most part, tolerated.

A friend said that he suspects Israel is going to try a Sherman's March to the Sea type action to just devistate some areas totally and completely.

Of course, if that's the truth, I expect it to have zero effect. I'll just give more people reason to kill.

Oh, and our troops in Iraq? It's going to turn into FAR more of a meat grinder.
