Smug (adj.): What to call someone who turned out to be right all along to spare yourself the indignity of having to admit it ex: "Those anti-Iraq War liberals are such a smug bunch!"
I meant it more in the sense of "hasn't had a chance to be wrong yet." Please note that I am snarking about a group of which I am a part. My apologies if I sounded, well, smug.
ashnistrike has an excellent point, though. I can't say that non-Book religions are doing a lot better than Bookist religions are; the sample isn't large enough for a finding either way. Japan isn't a bad society, coming out of a background of Shinto and Buddhism. On the other hand, Hindu India is a mess. China has its fair share of problems, not the least of which is a lack of freedoms for its citizens, and that's an atheist government, officially if not necessarily by its actions considering that it provides a state-sponsored version of Catholicism that is at least nominally answerable to the Vatican. The USSR didn't fare so well as a governing body either, and they were officially atheist, as well. Cuba isn't doing badly, if you're willing to overlook all the human rights violations claims, and it's officially atheist, as well. At least most of the restrictions on religious freedom there have been repealled since 1991.
I don't want to come off as smug. I don't think I'm wrong regarding the Book being a big fat excuse for some of the worst crimes in human history, though.
