I may say this in the future, "I mean, we're not unreasonable! No one's gonna eat your eyes."

Delightful! I have always loved the song, but it's really fun to read the translated text. Not an exact translation, so it's interesting to see what could and could not be used in the original lyrics.

Now see the subtitles made me wonder something.

How much subtlety is there in ASL that is missed by people who didn't grow up learning it? Perhaps the ASL translation for that song would be spot-on if done by someone who's lived with ASL their whole life.

It's the same sort of thing I wonder when watching subtitled anime. The direct translation is sometimes so different that I know either the translator screwed up or they're trying to represent a concept that English doesn't have.

ASL doesn't rely entirely on signs. People who aren't in or closely associated with the Deaf community don't really have an appreciation for the subtleties of ASL.
You can't exchange ASL signs directly for english words, as you could if the person spoke Signed Exact English (which is cumbersome and slow).
IMHO, about 90% of the meaning in ASL comes from subtle movements of the eyebrows, tilt of the head, facial expression, hand position (high, low, close to the body, far from the body), and the force (soft, medium, hard) of the signer's movements...and much, much more.

I've been learning ASL for years now, and I STILL miss many of the little but critical pieces!

I've seen this before, but enjoyed seeing it again. This guy is quite a performer, and I like the way he stays in rhythm with the song and uses facial expressions to communicate emotion beyond just the words. The costuming is pretty cool as well.

Yay! Glad to see you pimping my friends, Tom.

The guy in the video is Stephen Torrence. He's awesome and talented beyond belief. He does lots of nifty stuff.

Awhile back, he even let me guest on his podcast. http://www.badphilosophy.com/blog/2010/02/22/episode-059-cheap-chocolate-eve/

This post makes me happy.

I've been absolutely loving the things this guy posts up on YouTube. What he does is take music he hears in games or TV shows and then arranges it for piano, all by ear. He has an entire 'album' of songs that he made available free (since copyrights and all) from Aion (my current MMO crack of choice). Not only are the songs beautiful (and very true to the originals) but his arrangements and variations add some beautiful depth to the songs. He is one of the reasons I really want to learn to play piano even more now.

This is one of the most important pieces in Aion, called "Forgotten Sorrow." The lyrics to it (in English) make very little sense, and I don't speak Korean so I couldn't tell you if those are any better, but the music itself is very moving.
