When given a choice between Star Trek and Star Wars, I choose both.

I remember the days when there was neither, and there was much longing and dissatisfaction therefrom.

Star Trek has definitely kept my interest and attention in a way that Star Wars hasn't (for example, I have a whole shelf full of Star Trek tie-in books, but not a single one from Star Wars), but that doesn't mean I begrudge the Star Wars fans their interest and attention.

I liked the first 3 Star Wars films, and like everyone else in 1977 I was blown away by the special effects - but they never grabbed my heart and gut the way Star Trek did. (I was a pariah in my high school SF club for ONLY seeing SW *twice*.)

Why all the hate on Twilight? First, I admit I haven't seen the movies or read the books and I wouldn't know good literature if it hit me in the face. But it is really that big of a deal that the vampires glitter? Does ever multi-book franchise need to have an epic plot with the fate of millions hanging in the balance? Can't a series be focused on the trials of one person? The target audience are teenage girls so yeah, it takes place in a high school. If the target audience was women in their early 20s, it would take place in a college. Oh and the bad writing, well people have accused Star Trek and Star Wars of having bad writing too (ie Phantom Menace).

The only real problem I have is how it treats women. As critics have pointed out, the heroine takes a passive role. One supporter said she was battling depression. But she doesn't appear to do any actual battling with it, she just accepts it and let men without shirts do the work.

So if that's your gripe, go ahead and gripe. I'll stand with you. If you have some other reason to hate Twilight, please speak up. Just be more specific and enough with complaining about the dayglow nightwalkers. It's like complaining that a Porshe has the wrong spoiler in the back.

My main gripe is how it treats women - particularly the creepy!stalking=love and I think it puts forth some dangerous ideas/messages for pre-teen/teen girls. (That said I would not try to prevent anyone, teenage or otherwise, from reading/watching it but I would try to steer them towards/recommend other books as well with stronger and more nuanced female characters - any book by Tamora Pierce for example)

As for the rest, I have trouble taking the books seriously. If the tone/intention of the book was different then the sparkling and all the rest wouldn't be as big a deal. (Example - there is a book about a Vampire Support Group - you know going in its supposed to be fun) But she has these scenes that are supposed to be tense and serious where characters are revealing their feeling and I'm laughing through the whole scene because it is so over the top with purple prose. The books are ridiculous which if that was the intension could be a lot of fun - It’s not so much that the vampires sparkle, it’s that we are supposed to take sparkling vampires seriously.

This is of course only my opinion- other people may feel differently.

Babylon 5 all the way! That said, I've enjoyed things about both ST and SW and been frustrated about things in both, but am glad both exist. And I think George Takei is unequivocally awesome. As for Twilight, professionally, as a librarian, I am for anything that gets people reading but personally I think the mashup video of Buffy staking Edward is one of the best things about the internet. (Thank you George for the Buffy shout-out)

This actually bugs me a bit, because it's bringing Twilight into the spotlight again instead of letting it die the deserved death of the flash in the pan. It's actually severely multiplied the amount of Twilight mentions in my newsfeeds and flist, which is honestly not something I'm particularly thrilled about.

Why is Twilight even being mentioned in the same breath as decades-long SFF staples? Why should fans of the latter even have the former show up on their radar? It makes as much sense as two pedigree dog kennels being encouraged to go beat up a brain-damaged Chihuahua.
