Trolls Make My Teeth Ache
Aug. 29th, 2006 12:08 pmI seem to have a troll. Loads of fun, and nearly completely wrong on everything except the fact that I used to have a really messy car, which was kinda common knowledge so it's not exactly the big reveal in Act Three of CSI: Fandom.
Word to the troll, whose IP is noted and logged: Don't bother. I am not a tech whiz, and don't pretend to be one. I know lots of real tech whizzes, and they are the people I go to when I have serious problems. But I'm not clueless either.
If you've got a genuine problem with me about something, the e-mail is filkertom at yahoo dot com. I'll listen. If I just offend you on general principles, though, sorry, but I don't feel like explaining private details of my life just to deflect an amateur-night Don Rickles. If you just want to insult me from behind a fake name, both of us have better things to do.
So, is anybody else holding some kinda grudge I should know about? Have I ticked you off? Something unresolved? I'm very serious here. Apart from the Bush Administration and their enablers, I don't need or want enemies. Certainly not in fandom, not among people whom I consider friends. If you'd rather take it to e-mail, that's good too.

Date: 2006-08-29 04:35 pm (UTC)Second LJ troll I've seen after a filker lately. Weird. Don't think it's the same person, though. Not the same style.
One of the great drawbacks of the internet, which I first encountered on MOOs: the lure of anonymity. It brings out the worst in some people.
anonymity on the Internet
Date: 2006-08-29 05:26 pm (UTC)Example: a close friend of mine back in my ill-fated first semester of college and I were both heavy-duty MOOers (The Sprawl, IIRC). My friend would routinely "do" sexual things in the MOO that she would never consider doing IRL, even when one of her MOO-sex partners was going to be in a place, geographically, where the two of them might meet.
Anonymity is a two-edged sword. Yes, it gives you the freedom to be an asshole, but it also gives you the freedom to experiment in a relatively safe manner. So I wouldn't consider it a drawback, per se. More like a powerful tool that can easily be misused.

Date: 2006-08-29 05:20 pm (UTC)Then there are the full-blooded trolls. These trolls know they are trolls and just go around trying to piss people off. They don't care who. They don't care how. They just like to troll. I have yet to capture a troll and interrogate them while they are still alive. Because of this, I do not know what motivational factor drives them to behave this way.
And finally there are the were-trolls. Were-trolls are people who are only trolls when exposed to a particular person or particular subject. You are most likely aware of the Clinton trolls. No matter what you say to them, they will troll about Clinton was an evil, terrible President who could do nothing right. In some cases, individuals are infected by some unknown origin with were-troll blood. This is when they troll after a particular person and will follow them across the web to try and hurt them.
I suspect you are victim of a were-troll.

And hell, you should see the back of my car...eeep! Three different high-heeled black boots that I can't seem to find mates for...a Japanese umbrella...a Dr. Seuss book...and a stick that I put back there for some reason, but I can't remember why...

The front and back seat of my pickup is similar. The floor of the front seat is currently filled with empty water bottles and a ton of pistachio shells at the moment. Behind the driver's seat is a plastic tote full of misc papers and crap. On the floor back there is even more misc crap.
Thankfully it's not as bad as a friends car once was - he had a ton of McDonald's bags in there and spilled milk for a week or more. *shudder* Of course that was also the car we called The Orcmobile because it was an ugly brown 80's Dodge Charger with an orange bumper sticker that said "Orcs are okay...if you use lots of ketchup."
All this talk of trolls make me wonder what a trollburger would taste like...

Date: 2006-08-29 05:50 pm (UTC)I can't listen to "One Week" anymore without singing, "Bring me the head of Londo Molari" at the end.
Also, "Five Years" gets stuck in my head really, really easily.
This is why I hate you.
(Not really.)

Date: 2006-08-29 06:00 pm (UTC)All that because of one troll message? I was hoping to see a good fight and all I find is some stupid insults? Sigh.
Anyway, why I'm here. Not a grudge, so you may be disappointed. I'm here to offer a rare glimpse of the other side. I'm conservative. Not republican, but conservative. And, for some reason, I occasionally read your journal.
Your troll? Probably not a political opponent. I doubt if you have any here. None that care enough to troll, anyway. Perhaps if you find some argument you've soundly won you might find your troll, but for the most part you don't have arguments here. You have monologs. And some cheering. That's because you don't tolerate political opposition in your social circles. For the most part, conservatives and Christians aren't tolerated in fandom. The liberal fandom groupthink has so convinced itself that it's brilliant and everyone else is stupid that it's left no room for argument. Or friendship. So who's the audience for your political screed?
I read your journal because I find it amusing. You more than most have convinced me that the liberal idea of activism is to whine to other liberals. This is comforting. You are harmless. You have an audience with which you do nothing constructive.
You see, I'm actually quite moderate. I'm just the kind of person you might be able to sway with cogent liberal argument. If you weren't so vicious and hateful and paranoid. If fandom wasn't such a safe place to be vicious and hateful and paranoid.
(no subject)
Date: 2006-08-29 06:16 pm (UTC)And I disagree.
Christians are tolerated in Fandom. Come to Darkover this November and sing the Halleujah Chorus on Saturday night. Christians are the minority. Just cause some idiot wears a "Christianity is stupid" shirt doesn't make all of fandom agree. Tom's position on religion I have tangled with him on, and I aint even Christian.
I disagree with Tom on occasion about his underlying political conclusions, but his posts usually go to the target of a problem.
Ex: Show me a real conservative who says he is happy with GWB and I'll show you someone in denial....like John McCain.

From:In defense of trolls, kinda...
Date: 2006-08-29 06:10 pm (UTC)And spewing stuff nobody cares about is easy too.
But once you acquire a troll who has to attack you on the basis of your lack of automative maintenance for a Ford Tempo (one of the biggest lemons EVER ANYWAY), that must mean you said something significant... because he felt he had to say something to stop you even though he wasn't capable of doing it by shredding your views.
So Trolls are good. Trolls are *controls*. Trolls serve an important purpose. And without impotent idiots as them, we wouldn't know who the idiots feel threatened by.
So I say congrats for making the bigtime :-D
Oh, no grudges here. :-)
